OH NO! teddy ate chocolate!
 

Oh my goodness, im so worried. Somehow Teddy got ahold of a dove dark chocolate heart. However, i got to him before he had eaten it whole. He had just gotten a small part of the wrapping and licked a bit off the top of the heart. He didnt get a large amount, but im still worried!

I looked on the side of the bag and it says a serving is 6 hearts which is 42 grams. So one heart is 7 grams. There are about 28 grams in an ounce, and he didnt eat the whole 7 gram heart. He didn't look like he had licked even half of that which would be 3 and a half grams. I looked on here at previous threads and found the dangerous amounts of chocolate, and did the math. It doesn't seem like the amount he got will be a problem. But im worried about the bit of wrapping that he got as well, and the fact that it was DARK chocolate!

Am i over reacting? I do feel a bit ridiculous, but i just want to make sure. He is acting himself, just fine. He is very small though, about 5 pounds. :confused:

I'm so sorry your teddy got into the chocolate. But I completely undertsand why your worried, any good mom would be. I think he should be ok though since he just licked it. But I would watch him to see if his behaviour changes in any way. If it does I would take him to the vet or call them and ask for their advice. I hope your cutie is okay!

Don't worry I'm sure he will be just fine. Every dog reacts differently but Coco has had her share of accidental chocolate and has never gotten sick at this point from it (knock on wood). The little boogers are too fast. But I usually catch her before she has too much. Though she did once eat 1/4 of a dark chocolate bar once. I couldn't sleep alllll night I was so worried but she was fine. Didn't throw up or have diarhea or anything. Don't worry, juts keep an eye on him.

Dark chocolate, baker's chocolate and cocoa are the worst kinds of chocolate for a dog to ingest. Since your dog licked a couple of times, I wouldn't worry but if your dog actually ate some, that is a cause for concern. To make a dog vomit...it's one teaspoon hydrogen peroxide for every 10 pounds of body weight.

I would think a little lick of dark chocolate would not bother him at all but I can see why you worried. I've always know chocolate was not good (and possibly lethal) for dogs but since being here on YT, my goodness.... you can scare yourself pretty bad with some of the worries on here! Tatum actually ate almost a half of a Hershey bar this weekend. I had started eating it but had to jump up to go get something for my husband who was standing at the door in muddy shoes. Laid that Hershey down not even thinking (Tatum does not usually even attempt to get to things she's not offered.... usually!). The chocolate was just too tempting and when I came back she had all but one square eaten - she ate almost half of the bar.

And yes, after all the worrisome posts on here about chocolate, I was a bit concerned BUT I do know that milk chocolate is the least dangerous so I just watched her for a while. She spit up a little about an hour later but after that was fine. As I'm sure yours will be too!

He should be Ok. Cali recently got a hold of a foiled wrap peanut butter cup and chewed it a little before I got it away and she was fine.

You could call the doggie poison hotline and ask about it. They are very helpful. They have a vet on the line for you 24 hrs a day. It's run by the ASPCA and the number is (888) 426-4435. They say on the web site and on the message when you first call that a $55 charge may be required, but when I called they didn't ask for anything and I got thru to a vet right away.

My Pookie managed to lick off the outside of a prescription sleeping pill, and I was quite alarmed of course. But the vet on the poison hotline told me it has the opposite effect as in humans. It makes them agitated and she would show signs within an hour of ingesting anything. Well, the pill was dry when I found it, just the outside was licked off. So we had no idea when she got ahold of it. But we saw no ill effects from it. Last night, again she found a capsule (under my bed where I was flat on my back for months with sciatic pain, and was trying to pour meds into my hand while lying flat on my back). She had dissolved a small portion of the outer capsule, but hadn't gotten too much of the contents. She hasn't shown any ill effects from that either. Whew! I've checked under our bed with a mag lite, but I'm going to have to do it again, obviously.

My bratty skin kids left the hot chocolate mix on the table and the other bratty fur kids got on the table while we were gone. Guess what? They knocked the chocolate mix onto the floor and had a good old time getting hypered up. I was so scared I was going to have a bunch of dead dogs but they were acting fine so I just kept an eye on them. There was no way to figure out who had the most so I couldn't even judge them by the dog who would have the smallest system. Maybe this stuff wasn't as toxic as other kinds of chocolate but you can believe me, I blasted the skin kids. The only reaction I found other than them being hyper was almost black poop. Sylvia

Thank you all for the help and advice. Its been over a day since Teddy had his little lick of chocolate. He's fine! :smile: I must have over estimated the amount he actually consumed, of course.
