Blood in Stool Since about 7pm last night Cole has had diarreah. He appeared fine otherwise and then I woke up in the night to check on him and there was blood in his stool! Being a concerned mom, I called the Vet and they said that it was fairly normal with the little ones as they break capillaries due to the stress when they are sick like that. I am thinking I should bring him in anyway. Has anyone had a similar experience?? What did you do?? :( |
I have had this happen several times with my dogs, It can be colitis, if they get stressed or an infection. I have taken a stool sample in and then they can tell if they need medication and diet modifications. I always prefer to check these things out to be sure since they are so small. I hope it is nothing. |
I agree. I just want to be sure. I just didn't know if this was a common thing that a good amount of people have experienced. Was it ever a bigger health concern for you? |
I would let your vet know about it but its not necessarily something to be alarmed about. Chachi had diahrea once with blood in it and the vet said it was just irritation in his bowels. If it were somethiing like parvo your dog would be showing other symptoms |
Not to mention how HORRIFIC that bloody parvo smell is. These Yorkies can easily get intestinal upset from food or stress. If you have given him something differnt to eat then that may explain it. Usually when it's a food problem, you have to stop giving all food, and just give pedylite and nutri-cal for an entire day. If after that the diarrhea is worse, then I'd be in the Vets. office pronto. |
I have been giving him the W/D prescription diet food since his first incidnet last night. This ALWAYS clears it up so if he is still bad tonight, I will know something is up and get him to the vet ASAP. |
Could anyone tell me a little bit more about parvo?? What is it? What are the symptoms? |
Here is some info on Parvo http://www.workingdogs.com/parvofaq.htm |
My Momiji had few diarreah with blood. I freaked out first couple of times. Now she is fine and haven't had any insident but I did take her to vet each time. (Wow expensive!!) Anyhow I think it is more common than you may think. |
I have had this baby on my mind today, any updates? I do hope he is doing better. |
UPDATE (and another q) Thanks everyone for your help. Cole is doing MUCH better. I was so worried because after hearing about the Parvo, I was thinking to myself that the smell was definately worse than normal. Yesterday his sool hardened up a bit and is getting back to normal. One quick question, yesterday it was almost a gel like consistence (sorry, I know this isn't exactly the most pleasant topic). Is that odd? I was thankful at that point it wasnt as bad as it was the day before. |
kikko had diarrhea and blood in his stool ... it could be a parasite, that's what he had - giardia. vet thought maypbe parvo if the giardia meds didn't help him, luckily they did. how's your baby doing now? if he is still having probs, take him to the vet and be careful of dehydration if he's still having diarrhea. watch his appetite too. |
A check-up would be good! Sorry to be the downer, but I would get him checked for parasites. I wonder about your vet too, can you see another? Did the vet check for parasites when you first got your baby? It isn't uncommon for babies to have parasites, and occasionally you may see blood. I am especially worried about the "gel like consistancy" you mentioned. Don't get too worried! My Chibi had parasites, but took medicine and now is O.K. Good luck! |
diarreah One quick bit of advice from a vet tech! Pedialite is ok to give to puppies, but ALWAYS make sure it is the clear one. Never give the colored flavored ones to your babies! Parvo is a smell that you will never forget once you have smelled it once. Parvo doesn't kill the dog, dehydration does. That's why Parvo is sooo bad because they dehydrate so fast. Bobbie |
I can't tell you all how much I appreciate your advice. You have been so helpful. I am brining Cole in today to see the Vet and get him checked for anything and everything. His stool is no longer bloody or gel like but is still a little runny. I am worried about him getting dehydrated. I will be sure to update you all and thanks again. :aimeeyork Amanda |
