I'm concerned about new mom.. I'm sorry if this is not a true sick or emergency issue, but I am very worried about my gal and have never been through this before so I am looking for some advice. She had pups on Dec 5 and just this past week has basically stopped feeding the pups for more than a few seconds even...Well I was away all day and I just returned home to find her breasts...belly area is really puffy and rather hard at the same time...It wasn't like that this morning I took pictures to try and explain....I don't know what is normal for when they stop feeding so I am concerned. |
Anyone out there? Anyone? |

Hi, I don't have much experience with dogs, but when my girl first had the puppies they weren't nursing off of her back teats and she looked like that in the back. My vet looked at them and said it wasn't a problem unless they got really hot, or the milk that I squeezed out of her wasn't bloody or yellow. In horses they swell up huge when they wean the foal, and it's pretty normal. Whitney |

Is she doing any better today? I can't find your number...call me if you need to. That needs expressed one way or another. After Tiah's c-section the pups weren't using the bottom 2 teats and they looked like that and the milk was clear. I layed her on her back on my legs while sitting on the floor and had the pups nurse from those 2 only until the teats got back to normal. Your pups are getting older and old enough to be weaned. I control the weaning process so it is a little at a time. |

She may be ingorged with milk because she has more than the puppies can hold. That would worry me silly and I'd be taking mom and pups to the Vet. pronto. |
If you gently massage her teets it will help relieve some of the discomfort. My girl looked just like that when she stopped feeding too. |
Looks like it could be mastisis (sp?). Our vet said to take a warm washcloth to help with the pain and hold it on there..massaging does help too to break up it up a bit...get the pups to feed off the ones that look really full first. You may have to hand milk her too to get the milk out. Take her temp also and then I would call the vet (because I always do). They may want to put her on meds. Pups need to be fed, but when they are hard like this it hurts. That's what MY vet said though...... |
My Mikayla looked the same way when she was nursing and it seemed to happen almost over night. I took her to the vet because I was very worried too and he also said to put a warm washcloth on the and massage them or milk them and to try to put the pups on the full hard ones. I did and she was better by the next day. |
If its anything like humans that nurse..she is probably engorged...OUCH!!! I remember being engorged and it hurt like H@##..a warm bath or washcloth should help some...and start expressing it for her to get the exess out of her.. Dawn |
Hi, one of my last moms resigned her job as mom at 2 weeks and was so engorged and red and warn. I expressed enough milk to give her comfort-it was way too much fighting to get the puppies to nurse. Alternating warm and cool cloths was soothing to her. Also, the top of a tubesock with the foot cut off can help apply gentle pressure. I know a woman whose mom had mastitis and the breast became gangrenous. That mom can never be bred again and she almost died. Her entire breast was removed. It was horrible so I that these things very seriously!! Keep us UTD.... |
Yeah, I do believe she is engorged. Mastitis is actually when engorged milk ducts become infected, so it may not necessarily be mastitis. In humans, if it persists more than a couple of days, it is time to worry. Don't know about dogs. I'd call the vet to be safe. When I was nursing my own human babies, I got it with my second baby. Cool cabbage leaves placed on them helped relieve the swelling. I wonder if you put them on her if she wouldn't eat them. |
