Tyson is also getting fixed in the AM we are in FL so please all the well wishes are needed here. I am a human nurse and I hate SX and the last thing I want is to leave my pup at the DR in the AM he will be dropped off at 7AM and we will pick him up at 5PM........any last min info will be great, like the other moms and dads there is always just that sadness that WE know what is going on but Ty has no idea. We made it Tys day today and gave him extra extra loves, he is just sitting in the couch with me looking around. I love him so much.......I just wanted to put good thoughts out there and have anyone who will send a little extra word up to whoever it is that looks after your pups......Thanks to all............CHRISTINE

One more thing, looks like he will be getting some teeth pulled also, any ideas about anyhing for when he gets home will be good......He will already have lots of love from me and dad, but anyhing else we need to get or can do for him let us know. This is mine and my fiance first dor of our own, we had doge growing up, but it is sooooooooooooooooo different when they are yours.........thanks to all

I know what you mean. I'm a surgical nurse so I know EXACTLY what Bella will be going through in the morning. UGH!!:(

Your vet will explain all you need to know about aftercare, so try not to worry!
I'm sure he will do just fine - all dogs are different in the ways that they behave immediately following the surgery, so it's difficult to tell you exactly what you can expect. DO expect that he will be EXTREMELY lethargic when you pick him up tonight - he will likely want to sleep the whole night - and let him! The more he rests, the faster he'll feel better and heal.

Your vet might give you a pain killer since he is having teeth pulled and he will explain when and how to administer that. Depending on how many are pulled, his mouth might be quite sore - I know for Oscar, he had 14 teeth pulled, and that first night was a total nightmare for him. Around 3 in the morning he was awake and moaning (putting his little paw over his face and everything - so sad to watch) because his mouth was so sore. Ruthie on the other hand, was just recently spayed and had 12 teeth pulled - she had NO problems whatsoever - was actually CHEWING her bone a little the next day. Like I said, it's different with all dogs. Some vets suggest no food until the following day - I don't know about anyone else, but Oscar and Ruthie were STARVING when they got home - mind you, I only gave them a small meal of soft food so their tummy wouldn't get upset.

Just give him lots of loving and cuddles - make sure he's getting lots of rest and try to keep him from running/jumping for the first week at least. No baths for about 10 days after the surgery (not until his stitches are out at least - but once they are out, you should continue to watch the incision for a couple days to make sure it doesnt re-open). DEFINITELY keep him from licking/biting at the incision - either use the collar they supply or, you can do what I did and fashion a little diaper for him out of an old cotton teeshirt. I opted for the diaper because I have concerns about anything being around their small necks. The diaper worked really well for both Oscar and Ruthie - when I was able to watch them I took the diaper off so that the incision could 'breathe' - at night I would put the diaper on since they seemed to want to be sneaky and lick while I was sleeping.

I can't think of anything else - I apologize for the lengthy post - hopefully others will add to it - I'm sure I've missed something.

Thank you sooooooooo much, it makes me feel so good that there are others that love there pup like we do. I never thought I could but Tyson is one great pup. I will do what everyone else has been doing I like the idea of not having the collar on and having something there in its place and opening it when we can keep a good eye on him, sounds like the next 2 days will be TY days but thats OK, I cant wait to spend the next 2 days giving lots of hugs. I am off to get him in about 3 hours and will update again by tomorrow.....THANKS AGAIN

Yes I know we all love our pups and worry so much. I find that the calmer I am with them with medical issues the better off they end up being...as we all know they pick up on our feelings and emotions more so than other humans even. If you're calm and relaxed he'll pick up on that and recovery will be a snap. Take Care and I'm confident everything is going to turn out great!!

My only suggestion is to give him a LOT of TLC when he comes home and BEFORE you leave the vet make sure they give you alittle something for pain. Some vets think this is just a routine procedure and they don't think they need anything for pain. My vet asked me if I wanted something for pain for Kallie when we had her spayed........I said yes, absolutely........just in case. Hard for a dog to tell you to what degree they are having pain. So for the first day, I just gave her a pain killer anyway. She did great. Your little one will do fine.............just lots of TLC.
