Please Help Does anyone know the signs and symptoms of a puppy bladder infection? I recently got a 7 mos old yorkie and he can't get enough to drink (he would drink a 50 gallon bucket if you let him) and he pees way too frequently im talking every 5-10 minutes. He had hernia surgery not all that long ago, the problem is fixed could this be causing his prob? Please help not sure if simon needs to go to the vet. Thank you Laura |
Please help Im not sure what to do he was put on antibiotics but still is peeing all the time. Could this be just an infection or something serious? |
Have him checked for diabetes insipidus. |
Can they get that at 7 months? |
You need to get that little baby to a Vet. ASAP. He could have a kidney infection or diabetes. Lets also pray he doesn't have a liver shunt. How long have you had this baby? I would also call the breeder and let them know about this, and if it is a major problem then they should either give you your money back or pay the Vet. bill. I hope you have a contract! |
I took simon to the vet and he was checked for diabetes. It turned out not to be that. :) the vet said it could just be a behavior problem, but he is peeing all the time and every where. Simon was given to me free and the lady that i got him from took care of him. What is a liver shunt? Symptoms? Any imput would greatly be appreciated |
Hi there ~ Why did this lady give you the puppy? Was she having similar problems. Did your vet do an urinalysis? He could have a bladder infection. Ask your vet about that possibility.:p :p |
Yes she had similar problems and just didn't know what to do. He has been on antibiotics for 2 days now but no change. He eats fine. And wants water all the time (im having to limit him) and when he pees its quite a bit instead of little bits like an infection. Im just confused i don't want to get on to him if there is a problem, but then again i want to discipline him if hes just being awnry. Maybe i should take him back to the vet and make them check his kidneys. Any one else have this problem? |
Did the vet do any bloodwork? Infection shoud be ruled out before assuming it's a behavior problem:( He may just be scared since he's in a new home and just needs time to adjust. I'd limit his water intake for now, just make sure that he gets a drink every couple of hours, and take him potty afterward. |
I would maybe take him to another vet. If you explained to your vet how much he is drinking and peeing, I think they would have checked for more than diabetes and not just say it could be a behavior problem. You may want to track his water intake (in oz's), in a day. on average a dog should drink approx one ounce for every pound of body weight give or take, then let the vet know this. If he is sick or has a problem, and needs the water, it would not be good to withhold it from him. If the previous owner had this same issue, I am not sure it is behavioral. |
I have had a cat with a bladder infection (I have had them myself....OUCH!) You actually don't pee all the time...you just FEEL like you have to and, only drips come out and.....it hurts horrible! |
Im thinking its not a bladder infection because this little fellow pees a big amoung every time. Does anyone know if there are any other problems associated with drinking water all the time if you let them and peeing every 5 min (large amounts). His diabetes exam came back good at 116? Maybe he is just stubbon but i feel there is something wrong somewhere. |
How much does your puppy weigh? What brand of food are you feeding him?Did he get tested for liver and kidney function? |
You really do need to find a reputable Vet. ASAP! The early signs of kidney failure typically are increased thirst, frequent urination with large quantities of pale urine, inability to hold urine all night, and occasional periods of low energy, lack of appetite, and nausea or vomiting that last for a few days at a time. If you are observant, yu can detect these signs of kidney failure early. That way yu stand a much better chance of prolonging your animal's life with a special diet and other natural treatments than if yu wait until an emergency. |

One thing that I have learned is that neither doctors nor vets are right 100% of the time, and if something seems wrong, than most likely it is. I think if a vet is telling you this is a behavioral problem, I would see another vet. |

Hi No improvement, still going frequently. I feel so badly having to be the water police around here. I am going to try a different vet, one here in dexter this time. They gave him antibiotics just incase it was an infection but its been days and days still no improvement. Hopefully i will find out something when i get him in with a new vet. Thanks for all your help! |
Has he ever gotten dehydrated. I'm sure he needs more testing but you could also try some pedialite or gatorade to balance the electrolytes then he can absorb the water properly. Instead of it just running straight thru. I would try it to see if it helps. |
No never dehydrated that i know of. I will try to give him pedialite. How much should i give him? He weighs 11 lbs. |
