IV drip during neutering Is IV drip important during neutering? If you'd have to choose in between IV drip and blood work because of financial restraint, which would you choose? |
I would pick the IV drip if the vet felt it necessary. Chachi was neutered without the blood work done |
I am almost positive neither of mine had an IV during their spay/neuter surgeries. They should just gas them...they shouldn't need an IV. I would say do the bloodwork. |

I am going to talk to the vet tomorrow. If IV costs like $Can25-30, I am fine with it as blood work is already close to an extra 100 on top of the 200+ they charge me and not inlcuding the baby teeth extraction...but if the IV cost like another 50-80...its going to be like 300+ close to 400. |
Riley just ahd bloodwork before his dental surgery this week and it was only $27.00...I don't know what the IV drip would cost but if it were me I would do the bloodwork. |

$42 vet exam pre-neuter $25 blood work $150 Surgery $50 Teeth Cleaning and extractions if any were necessary (which is not..they were gonna do the extractions for free anyhow while he was under) $ (?) IV $ (?) Pain meds for after care They are also rerunning the blood work to check the kidney acid values that had come back high from the first test. So once they get that back then they will proceed with the surgery. |
I would definatley do bloodwork as it can determine if there is a condition that would cause him to not react well to the anethesia. If at all possible I would try and get both. |
The blood work can detect any abnormalities before the surgery is done, which in the long run is good. Say, if in the future he gets sick, they have a baseline to go from. An IV drip is the way they hydrate him during and after the procedure, since he won't be able to have anything to drink the day of surgery. It also allows them a quick way to give emergency drugs if needed. If I had to choose, I would go with the IV if your baby is healthy and there is no history of illness. I am an OR nurse and we have done many surgeries without bloodwork, but very few without an IV. |
Thanks guys. I will talk to them tomorrow and if I can, I will have both. If not, I will at least drop a note on what I am to decide on. |
I had a Maltese/Yorkie mix rescue that had bloodwork done before his neuter surgery. They found that he had anemia and that his blood was not clotting as good as it should. We had to build him up for 6 wks before he was ok to do the surgery. He was in rough shape when I got him @ 5 wks. He would also faint when he got his shots. His sister was the same way. That's the only time the bloodwork paid for itself. It's kind of like insurance. You pay for it and most of the time you really don't need it...but when you do.... |
