I was pretty sure that Ruthie has a roached back but now I'm wondering if it's just a slightly curved spine like yorkiek9trainer suggested... My understanding (from reading on here) was that there is a curve in the spine and it is accompanied with a down tail. Ruthie's tail is always curled up under her bum (you can't even see it most times) unless she's happy and wagging it, then it sticks out pretty much straight behind her - it doesn't go any higher. Sometimes I look at her and her back will look straight, which I've heard is also possible with a roached back - that the spine can straighten out sometimes. I asked my vet about it and she had never heard of the term 'roached back' - so I 'schooled' her, lol. I don't have a good profile shot of Ruthie Bear to show though... I'm curious to see if someone else has one to compare to.... Should I tell Ruthie's breeder about her back? It was pretty curved when I got her (so was Oscar's, but his straightened out completely by the time he was 5mths). |
cheese, dogs that have knee problems don't always show signs of weakness or pain. Not until the tendons are damaged enough for great inflamation, or there is enough degeneration in the joint. Don't worry though. I'm not saying that your girl has anything wrong w/ her by anymeans. Just saying for the other reader that these are two different backs that she's being introduced to. |

Anyway you've been very helpful and I will get a pic of her on here so you could see. |
The back is curved for both roach back and cheese. So how can you tell the difference? Could you please post pictures? Her parents did not have knee problems. Is Cheese genetic? I have never heard of this. She will be back from grandmas on Saturday, so I will take more pictures and send them too. |
1 Attachment(s) I;m trying to get some good photos of a roached spine, but I'm coming up empty, it's not something I would keep on my computer usually. Here's a European bloodline German Shepherd w/ a great topline and lay of croup...a little short, but it's laid nicely. Maybe it'd be best to show just Yorkie photos so everyone can relate. brb |
1 Attachment(s) Here is another picture of Rosie, but her back does not curve as much as it usually does. Poor baby. That is one ugly haircut:D |
2 Attachment(s) Cheeselover- Your girl isn't straight in the stifle at all. She actually has moderate angulation there...she's just high in the rear, according to the photo that you submitted. Here is a photo of a nice topline-level and no interuptions in the "line" from the neck to the base of the tail. The other is a puppy I pulled off of Google under Yorkie photos. While it's just a puppy and is angled poorly in the photo, I think you should be able to see the slight "bump" or interruption in his topline from the photo. Usualy located behind the withers to middle back in many breeds. |
So she doesn't have a roach back or knee problems. She just has a Jay Loe booty. Btw, I think it's getting late. By cheese you meant my sn not a name of a disorder. Haha. I feel dumb. What was I thinking?!? If you don't tell anyone of my dumb mistake then I won't;) |
:lol tears I already figured you'd catch yourself. Another post or two w/o mention and I would've maybe called you on it. Dork. :D Yeah, she's J-Lo in heels. :p |
LOL LOL I needed a laugh this morning... omega |
LOL I went to bed early...well not so early...but did I really miss this one...lol |
thanks for the laugh and information. K9trainer...you are always so helpful and knowledgable. |
Haha. I'm glad I made everyone laugh. |
topline Her topline looks more "down at the shoulders" then roached to me...the tail may be a touch too low also, but not severe. A roach back tends to be more cat like IMO... |
I don't think that is a good picture. She is playing in that one and I think she was doing the thing where her butt is in the air and her head is down. The picture was taken as she lifted her head. I will take more pictures when she comes back home tomorrow and post them. I am just not seeing what you are talking about. And after all this time I though she had a roach back. |
