Lucy's Still So Groggy Hi everyone. My little Lucy, 7 months old, 3 lbs 7 oz. was spayed today and had 4 teeth removed. We picked her up at 3:00 pm and she's still so groggy, wrapped in her blanket with me carrying her around. Nomatter what position I put her in it's fine with her. Should she still be this out of it 7 hours after surgery? I'm a bit concerned. |
Most good vet clinics keep them over night and this is the reason, To many people worry and the drugs have not worn off . She will be better in the morning. |
When Rocky was nuetered he really didn't come out of it until the next evening. Your baby should be fine :) |
Our baby was the same size and same procedures, 4 teeth and spay. She was groggy for about 2-3 days, I believe the pain medication contributes to this too. I see it as this, sleeping/resting will help them recoop faster. They recover so much faster than you know. Soon, your baby will be bouncing around and you will wish she will take it easy to avoid trauma to the stitches. |
Absolutely! I've never heard of a vet allowing the dog to leave quite so early... After Oscar's neuter and Ruthie's spay, I wasn't able to pick them up until 6 in the evening (same day as the surgery). It's perfectly normal for them to be groggy for the rest of the day/evening after the surgery. All Ruthie wanted to do was sleep for the rest of the night - the next morning she was running around as if nothing had happened. I wouldn't start to be concerned unless the lethargy lasts for more than a few days (this is what my vet told me). Let your baby get her rest - she needs it! |
This is one of the reasons why my vet said Gracie had to stay over night. They are really sleepy and can't hurt themselves if secured in a crate. Your baby should be fine tomorrow. When I brought Gracie home, it was about 18 hours or so after the procedure. She acted like nothing had happened. The pain meds did not seem to make her sleepy. The vet said they would make her relaxed, but that did not happen! Hope your baby feels better soon. |
AprilLove was around 3 lbs 4 oz when she waw spayed. I brought her home around 5 pm and she was still glassy eyed but she was awake and just mellow. I babied her and by the next morning she was wanting to run around and play and I had to keep her contained so she wouldn't hurt her stitches. Give it some time, she is probably still coming out of the pain meds (and hopefully they gave you something if she needs it.) ? You will most likely be finding yourself trying to keep her from moving around TOO much by tomoroow morning. Just love and cuddle her, and keep an eye on the sutures and don't let her jump on things or run too much. Isn't it good though to have it done, at least all the worry while they are at the vets getting the surgery is over! She may not poop for a day or so and this is normal also. IAs always, if you are concerned about anything. talk to your vet as they are more qualified to tell you what to expect. |
layla came home the same day of surgery.. so don't be too worried.. she was out of it for 2-3 days!! this is completely normal. you might have to help her pee because layla coudlnt' stand up the first 24 hours.. i set my alarm during the night to wake her up because i wans't sure she'd know if she had to pee... i was an over-worried mom.. she was just fine... and about 2 months ago we had teeth taken out.. same thing.. groggy for about 3 days... layla is also tiny so i think it takes a bit for the meds to wear off.. just spoil her tons :) |
Cali had to stay for 36 hours as she had more intestinal surgery at the same time and they gave her a pain shot the morning I picked her up and she was sleepy for days. Which is really better they give their little bodies time to heal. She should be better tomorrow. |
Maddie was also groggy for about 3 days after her spay. She took pain medication for 5 days so I think that contributed to it. I hope your baby feels better soon! |

You All Were Right! Good morning everyone! Well, as usual, you were all right on in your comments and advice. Lucy was so out of it all night and even though I read your posts, didn't want to take the time to answer till this morning since I had family visiting here as well. But this morning, she seems much, much better. She even peed and pooped! Thanks once again for all the calming advice. This is such a great website! |
I am glad Lucy is doing better today. When Jewels was spayed she was the same way groggy the night of but better by the next morning |

You just can't believe how many dogs end up at the ER at night if they are let go the same day. The owners should be told what to expect if they are going to send them home the same night. I am glad everything worked out for your little girl and I am sure you will get more sleep tonight. |

Glad your baby is all better today. My vet "offered" overnight care. When I said I'd like to take her home today, they told me exactly what to expect. And yea, she was quite out of it, just like they said she'd be, but was fine the next morning! |

The fact is, I wouldn't have wanted her to stay overnight. I don't know if they even have someone overnight there If they do, I think they maybe have one person there and you know he/she sleeps all night. Anyway, I was glad to have her home. I gave her a dose of pain meds this morning according to their direction but wasn't supposed to give her anymore until tomorrow morning however, I gave her another 1/2 dose a little bit ago. She would be sleeping and all of a sudden jump and sort of spin toward her belly like it hurt her for a second or two. then a couple of minutes later she would do it again. She hasn't done it since I gave her the additional pain meds. Hope I did the right thing. I really think it was okay. I just gave her 1/2 ml. |
I think you did the right thing giving her pain med. From your description, it sounds like she needed it. My Jazz has had 3 surgeries, and after his last one (for a congenital hip problem), when I brought him home, I ended up holding him all night. He was so knocked out, he was drooling, and completely limp. I kept my hand on him to make sure he was breathing. I did call the vet's office, and they said he'd be fine. I was terrified he would stop breathing. He did come out of it finally, and then his rapid recovery was amazing. (Edited to correct spelling) |
