My 8 Month Old Yorkie's Leg Got Broken And I Am Devestated I had a little Christmas gathering at my home Saturday for one of my employees and her 11 year old son (after I have told him many times not to) picked up my Willow and she was scared and squirmed and he dropped her on the floor and she broke her right back leg . . . the femer and the tibia . . . both were clean breaks. I am sick. I am angry. I have cried since it happened. I knew her leg was broken right away cuz I saw it . . . and I just scooped her up and literally ran out the door leaving my guests there and drove her the two miles to the emergency vet where they confirmed it. My poor puppy has a big pink cast on her leg and they said that she has to go to the regular vet tommorrow and probably be scheduled for surgery and have a plate put in. I am so devestated that I can't even think straight. I have been crying every time I look at her. I know I have to pull it together . . . and I know that it is just a dog . . . but she is just a little tiny thing and I just want her to be better. Will she be okay again? Will they put a plate in? Will they put pins in? How long can I expect for her to heal? Can you please give me some much needed help as to how I can help her? Thank you. |
You poor thing. That's every Yorkie owner's nightmare. It sounds like you're doing everything you possibly could. Good for you for getting her tended to immediately. Try not to worry. Vets are doing remarkable things these days. I have no experience with breaks, but my 4-pound rescue had surgery to repair his cranial cruciate ligament. That's what holds the knee together, and his leg was literally hanging before the surgery. It is now held together with two wires. I can honestly say that he was 90 percent perfect within a month of getting his cast off. Four months later, you would never know he injured it. These guys are so feisty that the hardest thing you'll have to do is keep her from moving too much. If round-the-clock care is possible for the first few days, consider it. If not, a crate or anything to keep her from moving too much. Your vet will know best. Good luck, and keep your chin up. These guys are incredibly resilient. |
I am sorry. I hope surgery goes well |
I am so sorry |
i am so sorry .hope she get better soon. hugs |
I'm so sorry too !! That had to be so upsetting.....Is she in pain or is she ok now ??? that's the reason I'm strict about who holds my girls - accidents happen so quickly :( I don't look at mine as just dogs - they're my family just like my kids are and I'd be sick if one broke her leg just like you are... Poor baby - hope she heals quickly... |
Poor baby and poor YOU! I know you're just sick about this, but so much can be done now to help. I just imagine your employee is almost as sick as you are. Hope all goes well with the surgery. Keep us updated. |
Thank you all for your concern and warm wishes for me and Willow. She slept straight through the night last night in my persian cat's "show shelter". I am keeping her as confined as possible so as not to injure the leg any more. It is casted and I have gotten the word already this morning that she will be going to the University of Minnesota for surgery. I am happy to hear of the remarkable things that can be done for these little creatures and feel a little better after reading your comments that she will do fine. It appears that my sweet little baby is much stronger than her momma. |
Oh that is so sad but I am glad you are taking her to the University hospital. She will get great care and I will keep you and her in my prayers. I know it must be so stressful. |
Thank you Patti. It is very stressful. She is probably doing much better than I think . . . but I am the one falling apart here. I feel so guilty for letting people in my home. I am her momma and I am supposed to protect her. |
I'm so sorry that this happened:( I've had lots of company as well over the holidays, and I have to be on alert at all times that no one picks up my little Luna, she's a jumper as well. Since you repeatedly asked the kid not to pick up your baby, perhaps his parents should be punishing him and helping with the vet expenses. I hate when kids don't listen, especially when it comes to a pet's safety, that just irks the hell outta me. If it were my child that did that, I would personally pay the vet bills and take it out of their allowance for the rest of their childhood:mad:! |
I am so sorry to hear about your Willow.....I'm sure modern medicine will be able to fix her up. Just a shame that it had to happen. I'm always fussing about our little Toby not making up with people who visit......but now I'm sort of glad that he is like that. He runs and barks at anyone who comes in that he does not know so I always hold him in my arms when we have visitors or I put him out on the lanai. I hope your workmate helps with the vet bills.........she should!!!! |
So sorry to hear this, so sad because we feel so helpless when they hurt themselves.:( |

I am so sorry to hear about your poor little Willow. Please don't beat yourself up over this. Accidents happen even when we are being the best Mommy we can be. It sounds like she is in great hands at the University Hospital and her little leg will heal, as will you. Sometimes we have to be insistent, to the point of neurotic, when it comes to rules with other people in our home's regarding our babies. I'm sure this 11 year old will not pick her up again. Sissy sends big kisses to both you and Willow and tells her to be brave. |
Good Morning Everyone . . . We were so very lucky to get an appointment today at the University of Minnesota and according to my regular vet . . . an orthopedic surgeon will be putting a tiny plate in her leg. I found out that it wasn't the two top leg bones that broke . . . but rather the two lower bones. I forgot the names. Tibia was one of them I think. The plate will be put in so the leg doesn't twist as it heals because both bones were broke. My vet said that Willow should make a full recovery so that is good. Now we will just pray that they tell us the same thing at the University. Willow and I want to thank you all for your love and well wishes. Thank you. |
prayers! You and your furbaby are in my prayers!!!! :) |
I am so sorry to hear about little Willow's accident...and glad to hear that she is expected to make a full recovery. I know how devastated I would be if something happened to my Daisy... she is tiny (still 1.13lbs) and the beat of my heart...:p I do have a question - about the little boy who did not listen and kept picking her up???? - Where was this childs mother or parent?? - Why did he or she not make the boy listen?? |

I am just reading this and am so sorry poor little Willow broke her leg. Don't feel guilty accidents happen. I do hope her surgery goes well and she is herself again real soon. Carol & Buddy |
I am so very sorry that your sweet baby was injured. I am so very glad that her injury wasn't quite as serious as you first thought. Sounds like she is in mighty good hands with the university doctors. Sending get well hugs :ghug: . I am also sending a virtual kick in the rump to the little hoodlum that dropped her. |
Oh my, I was just sick reading all this, I send lots of positive energy to Willow for a quick recovery! We had a window guy in for an estimate. He picked up (and then dropped) Lucy. He is used to big dogs, and cats- especially cats. Which you can pretty much drop. Thankfully, she was ok, but quite stunned. I was shocked. I had never seen anyone just drop a dog. Yes, she is squirmy... but... Then, My neighbor's son (6) kept picking up the dogs and holding them in a way that looked unstable, and I asked him not to, asked him to sit down if he was to hold the dogs. He didn't drop them, but continued to walk & carry them. I finally shouted, how would you like it if I dropped you out of a 2nd floor window? Because that's how high that is for a little dog! And then... the kid's mom got all miffed with me! She said he takes things so literally at his age, and now she was going to have to explain to him, that I was not literally going to drop him out of a window! New rule in my house: Visitors don't pick up my dogs. Period. Teresa |

Good Morning To All: Thank you everyone for your kind words and well wishes for me and Willow. It is now Thursday morning . . . 5 days after her injury . . . and she is being prepped for her surgery this morning. Her pre surgery blood tests came back with flying colors and the doctors were very optimistic. The doctor said that this is a very common leg break in "these little guys". It was first a concern that very small dogs can have systemic shunts in their livers . . . but little 3.5 pound Willow did not have any problems at all. Her bloodwork was perfect. They will now give her an epidural so she does not have to have as much anesthesia. I felt very good about the doctors that met with us and very proud that little Willow stopped squirming and panting and stood up on that table like a big girl and let them poke and prod at her. They were very good to her and they said their biggest concern is that she will put weight on her leg after her surgery, but not overdo it. I will have to keep her confined for four to six weeks letting her out of the kennel only enough to walk a bit. We can do it. I am just so relieved that I still have her because this could have been a lot worse than just two broken leg bones. I have a persian cat that was in a couple of cat shows and we have a "show shelter" that is like a little pop up tent that zips up and that will be Willow's bedroom for the next four to six weeks. It is made of a soft nylon and it will be nice and homy for her as opposed to a metal crate. I am going out today and buy some more potty pads and new blankets and stuffed toys for her homecoming, which they say will be either Friday or Saturday. Thank you again everyone for your encouragement as we go through this most trying time. We have learned a very valuable lesson through all of this and for every one of you that owns a precious little yorkie . . . do not feel bad about being firm about no one picking up your precious little baby. People may think we are being rude, but look what can happen in a split second. That little boy did not listen and one second of him picking Willow up has caused us many days of agony and many weeks of recovery . . . not to mention a $2,800 hospital bill. These little babies are too small and too fragile to have to endure something as unecessary as this. Keep your babies safe. Hugs to everyone from me and Willow. We will come back later today and let you know how she did for her surgery. |
