How much it costs for spay, etc. I have seen several posts from people wanting to know how much it costs to spay, have a micro chip implanted, etc. Before I file my bill away, I thought I would go ahead and post the charges I incurred for Gracie yesterday: Pain medication (Chewable Rimadyl) $8.69 Spay $61.75 Pre-Anesthetic screen $46.25 (blood tests) Inhalation Anesthesia $83.00 Analgesic (IM pain meds) $14.00 Micro Chip ID $35.50 Nail Trim $8.00 She also had a couple of retained baby teeth removed, but I don't see a charge for that. Anyway, grand total was $257.95. |
How young? Golly Gosh...she was very young for a spay??? Is she really 3 and a half months old?? Generally, in the UK, Vets always always always want to neuter the dogs at a very young age. People like myself, who Show and Breed, generally like to wait until the dogs have matured at around 18 months. Just that we feel they need to have a proper hormonal development and grown out of their puppy stage somewhat. In reality it's only 2 or 3 seasons to go through and unless you have an agressive male, there is no need to do a male early either? I suppose I just feel that physically they need to mature and develop as well as mentally/emotionally! I have not posted to upset or get at you in any way! Please don't think I have! I am just a bit amazed that a Vet would do this procedure on such a young baby! Maybe I have the age wrong?? I would also be intersted in how other people assess the correct age of neutering?:) All the best, love Dawn X |
Thanks for posting the costs! I have also read people's requests about prices & I've just been too lazy to drag my bills out. I live in Texas & the fees you paid seem very similar to what we pay. C.J. |

Don't get me started about how important it is to have a girl furbaby spayed. Our Muffin has breast cancer which would have been 100% preventable if she had been spayed. I have been beating myself up for the last two months because I didn't want to put her through being spayed when she was young. The surgery she's going through now is absolutely heart-breaking. |
Hi, I don't doubt for a start that Muffin and yourself are going through the mill! Muffin is just over 9 isn't she? However, what I questioned was the AGE at which to spay?? Young dogs of 18-24 months DO NOT generally get mammory cancer do they? Even if they aren't spayed until they are 2 or 3. So they can be safely spayed then, having been allowed to mature and yet prevent ALL the problems of an older dog going through the pyometras and cancer. I am truly truly sorry for your poor dog, and I'm sure of you read my post again you will find I am NOT against spaying pers se...just against Vets doing it too early! I have just had my 3 year old Newfie spayed as I cannot breed from her as she has a mild aortic stenosis. So she has had time to mature, let her coat develop and grow out of her puppy ways! All the best, Dawn;) |

Hi, you are certainly NOT an idiot woman!!!! LOL :) I know how hard it is to make decisions...I've been very lucky that I have met friends and breeders who have helped and advised me along the way! You don't just 'suddenly' get wisdom or an enquiring mind! I haven't just started Judging 'just like that' either, I've done, along with most folks! a long apprenticeship! My two 'ickle boys you see in the picture?...well, they are the most precious things in the whole World and I certainly would worry and fret about the right thing to do! For some reason, I don't know whether it's their size or their personality?? but I have never ever felt this way about my doggies before! They are just so darn cute!!! But then I've always had big, boisterous working dogs before them! I think that's why it's so difficult to make health decisions? Mine have Pet Passports and even that took some serious thought...mainly because the size of the dose, it's the same, whether it's a Yorkie or a Newfie!! So you have to be satisfied in your own mind that yes, you want to go down that route. The reason I decided to get them their Passports, was so I wouldn't have to leave them for any time if we went to our house in Greece! How on earth could I trust anyone else to look after them, or not lose them, or keep them warm etc etc etc for the time I was on Holiday! All I'm trying to say is that we have to find the balance that we are happy with and can live with. Hindsight is an amazing tool but is useless whilst we are making the decisions we need to!! I pray that Muffin and yourself get through this and that 2007 is a happier, healthier time with lots of cuddles and love, may God grant you peace and assurance, love Dawn XX:yorkiesar |
My vet quoted me a neutering fee of Can$215 (anasthesia included). Microchip is another Can$85. I am not sure about teeth extraction charges and pain killers. Maybe I'd neuter him first and look in to microchipping later. |
WOW It seems expensive to get a doggie micro chipped??? I'm not sure how much Canadian dollars are worth with UK pounds?? To be honest, for such a wee little doggies it is much nicer for them to be micro chipped whilst under!!! It saves then the pain of the procedure! Depends how brave they are really!? Here it costs between ?15 to ?25-30 pounds. We get a discount if it is done with first innoculations. Are there no charitable places over there, like the RSPCA, that will micro ship at base rate to encourage responsible ownership?? All the best, Dawn X:) |
I am guessing that Gracie was six months old. Her birth date is probably month/day/year. And that is generally when I believe we spay our pups. |
Birthdate of 06/10/06 makes her TWO AND A HALF months old??? WAY too early to spay...which is why I asked...even if she was 6 months old...I still think it's too early to spay! Hence the start of my discussion! Cheers, Dawn ;) |

AHA!!! Yes I remember now...we have OUR dates the wrong way round!!! LOL Not so bad then...glad I was wrong! All the best, Dawn :) |
Just had Little Bit spayed at 8 months, spay charge was $150 including all pain meds in clinic & 3 days of take home pain meds. No charge for pulling 6 teeth. She also required an overnight stay. Optional Pre op bloodwork was $40 and for some reason, she gave her another bordatella shot & did not charge for that. I asked about getting her microchipped & she said she did not do it because there wasn't a universal gun?? I also got some flea medicine and total was $201.00 |
I had Chloe spayed when she was 9 months old and she did great! I was definitely worried but I feel alot better now that it is over with! And she had to have two inguinal hernias fixed. Her spay and her hernia fixed cost me $269.00! If I hadn't had the hernia's fixed the spay would have cost 70.00 plus bloodwork which was 30.00! I love the vet we have too! |
I suppose things are cheaper in AL. I had Venus spayed and microchipped last week, and the total was $128. That included the blood work, and pain meds. |
I live in Texas and was told there are discount coupons available from the Man and Beast assoc which gives a big discount in the costs. |
Holy cow we must go to the most expensive vet in the US. When I had my newest yorkie Sassy spayed she was spayed had several teeth removed and her teeth cleaned and the bill was $500. She had a more expensive drug for anastheia I think because she was under 4lbs. but geeeeeez |
 So at what age do I get mines spayed once I bring her home? The breeder suggested before 8mths or before the nipples develop. I didn't think to ask what age would be to early. |
I paid 190$. I got the discount coupon from the shelter near my home for 50$. This paid for the spay. It was good at my vet and they in turn submit the coupon to the city for reimbursement. I paid extra for blood work, anesthesia gas, teeth extraction, and microchip. So the 190$ includes the coupon cost. It was a GREAT DEAL! |
I had kizzy and maggie spayed both @6 months. they also got microchipped, nails cut, trachea checks, ear mite checks because maggie had that when I got her so he rechecked all that, each of my bills were 119 and some change for everything he did. Dont have my bill right here but I know he didnt charge me full price as it was suppose to be 85 for the spay and 30 for the chip. thats 115 bucks right there. I know he didnt charge me for nail clips, he never does unless I just take them for just that. if he does other stuff, he dont charge to cut those. I'm very pleased with my vet. |
I called yesterday and was quoted $74 including the pain medication. This is a low cost spay clinic. I think they charge according to the wieght of the bitch. The area which it is in is nice. I know there are tons of Vets here and much much higher prices of course. $74 will hardly get you in and out the door on just a visit for most. |

My vet doesn't like to do early spays. He says you have to let them completely develop or you will have urinary problems later. Nancy |
So when is the best time/age? Ive always heard before the first heat cycle and I think my 13 yr old female was done at 6 months. |
I was so afraid Venus would go in heat early, so I had her done at 6 months. I couldn't risk Adonis getting her preg since he is about 2 lbs bigger than she is. And I know nothing of "heat signs". No way was I going to take a chance. Call me chickenchit, or being safe, either will do LOL. |
Thanks Bnot. I found out today with a coupon from Man/Beast Association its $50 for the spay. I called the Vet and they said additional fees are: $18 for the pain shot $15 for the heart monitor (they recommend). This worries me. Did anyone else have a heart monitor for the spaying? There was no mention of blood work. I don't recall in 1993 for my other Yorkie anything about bloodwork. |

Oh yea, and price ranges in spay/neuter costs are amazing! I work at Spay Today, a low cost spay/neuter program and lemmie tell ya we here the craziest price quotes everyday. It all depends on where you are. For ex a lady from Maryland was quoted $1,500.00 for two cat spays, no vaccs or testing included!! It's nuts! It cost me $275.00 for just Harleys neuter way back when and that didn't even include vaccs! lol |
