update: My sick Pound Puppy We went to the vet on Friday. She said that "Pops" has a severe neurological problem. She said that it would be kind to put him to sleep. She said that she could arrange for a consult with a neurologist, but that since there was no history on him and why he has this problem that it would be almost impossible to treat. I was going to take him home for the weekend and then put him to sleep on Monday. I CAN'T DO IT! He just got a little personality. Sashajade posted, and I think she just may be on the money. It sounds like her dog was doing the same thing that he is. They told me when I got him that they treated him for an ear infection. I am going to the consult with the neuro. If he just needs some very strong antibiotics, then how can I not? I'll do what I can and hopefully that will be enough. Is it cruel to try to keep him alive, even with the best intentions? I asked the vet if he was in pain or miserable and she said no. If the neuro says it's hopeless then I won't prolong the inevidible. |
Bless your heart, what a decision to have to make. I wish you well and will be praying for your pound puppy. |
:( :( :( :( How sad...... IF I were you I'd do the consult and when you know there is nothing more you can do ...then make that decision :( but in the meantime - try to be optimistic my heart goes out to you - I'm so sorry...I hope it IS something far less serious than it sounds - As long as you can tell he isn't in pain then I would be doing the same thing as you.....what a way to have your heart ripped out :( ALL THE BEST TO YOU AND GOOD LUCK AT THE DR appointment !! I hope it's just ears and hope you come let us know how it goes. |
I know this must be difficult. When my little girl Pippa had a neuro event a few months ago, we thought the worst and thought she might have a condition called AAI. Thankfully, her xray turned out normal and she's not had any problems since, but at the time my husband and I had very serious discussions about how far we would go medically to perhaps prolong her life, and would it be fair to her to go through a surgery that was only 50% successfull in most cases. Good luck in whatever decision you make. |
tell the vets to open up the dogs ears as a blood test and a xray wont always show an infection in the inner ear, they need to open the ears and flush them out then give antibotics that go in to the bone as normal ones wont touch it, this needs to be done right now before its to late, annie was like that then she couldnt walk at all, lift her head, went blind in one eye, had rem sleep disorder, and then a large lump by her ear that burst and came out her nose and mouth, all the time this was happening it was going to her brain. if your paying them dont ask then to do it TELL THEM. i hope it turns out ok. |
Breaks my heart to hear this:( I will light a candle for your pound puppy! |

Oh boy... Please hang in there. This guy sounds like he just needs to be taken good care of. Please do the consult and try to do whatever is possible, this little guy sounds like he deserves a fighting chance... I also live on Long Island. If you need some support I am here for you. :) |

update Very sad. Puppy had some really terrible seizures. The last one he lost all control of his bowels and bladder, foaming at the mouth. Had to stick a pen in his teeth because he was biting his tongue. (nearest thing I could find) After the seizure he tried to get up and just kept keeling over. He would get up again and just fall over. Maybe 6-10 times. I figured he'd had enough. I guess the meds weren't working. Maybe it was too late. I put him to sleep. I'm sure he's happy now! He was so cute, I bought a new one. <-- that was not meant to be flippant. I am very sad he is gone but know I did the right thing for him. I think we were meant to find each other. I realized I liked Yorkies and was able to take away his pain. I bought a 10 week old girl. We named her Sweet Pea. She's adorable. She is 2.4 lb. I am going to post on another forum later today. I am busy right now puppy proofing the house. I have some questions, but knew I had to update! Thank you all! -Janine |
