Flea Treatment...puppy is shaking? Please help, I gave my puppy a flea treatment at noon today and she acted really weird after I gave it to her but all pets normally do. Well it's been 4 hours and shes getting worse now shes taking about three steps at a time and laying down shaking. I'm in the process of giving her a bath to see if that helps...but has anyone had this problem...how worried should I be? |
What kind of flea treatment did you give her?! If it is anything other than something from your vet (i.e. Frontline, Advantix, etc), then I would be worried. Flea treatments like Hartz are very toxic to our little dogs. If the bath doesn't seem to help, I would get to her the emergency vet ASAP. |
Thanks for the response. yeah it was Hartz...she seems to be completely normal now since the bath, I'm wondering if it was the smell that was bothering her but I'm just watching her closely trying to decide what to do. My (horrible) vet actually told me to get whatever and that it wouldn't be a problem, I really didn't know...i feel so bad :( Hopefully she is ok now. |
i am glad she is better. I tried Frontline on ceeby once when he weighed about two pounds and he did the same thing. I scooped him up and bathed him soon as i saw him and he was better. vet said he is allergic to Frontline and not to use it on him anymore. |
Just for future reference... The best stuff to use on your puppy if it has fleas (Especially the young pups in which flea treatments/shampoo can't be used) is Johnson's baby shampoo. Fill the sink up with warm water (Like a warm bath) and fill it right up to your pups neck (Staying with her/him of course) and sit them in it for a few minutes then let the water out and rinse him/her off really well. Next, take Johnson's baby shampoo and suds him/her up real good and wrap a warm towel around your baby and stay with him/her like that for atleast six minutes but no more then ten minutes. After, rinse him/her off good again and make sure you go through the hair real well (I use the sink sprayer) After blow dry and use a flea comb to go through and then pick off any left overs with tweezers. You can repeat this the following day. The Johnson's smothers the fleas. I had a five week old pup that I took in and she had over 100 fleas on her. I immediately as soon as we got her home, did the above and repeated this the next day and all were gone. It's far more safer then chancing flea treatment on a pup. Elaine |
I'm glad she's feeling better. In the future, don't use anything for fleas except the Johnson's Baby Shampoo as described above or flea treatment from your vet. |
Thanks for the help...she seems back to normal...what a relief. |
Any flea treatment can cause a reaction to those pets that are sensitive to it. It probably wasn't the Hartz it's just that your dog is one of those that don't tolerate it. Check the label though because Hartz has many formulas and they have required minimum weights on them. I am so lucky to live here in the desert where fleas aren't a problem and don't need special treatment. |
Was just looking to see what the active ingredient was in Hartz and came across this site http://www.hartzvictims.org/ - maybe it was the Hartz. Everyone seems to recommend bathing in Dawn Dishwashing liquid. I even came across one mention that Hartz reimbursed the owners for the vet bills! From the EPA: Signs of individual animal sensitivity which may occur after use of this product include skin irritation or hair loss at the application site, salivation, tremors (twitching of muscles), and in some circumstances, severe full body tremors. If this persists please contact your veterinarian and notify Hartz at 1-800-275-1414. Animals should be observed after application for any sign of sensitivity. If signs of sensitivity occur, bathe your pet with mild soap, rinse with large amounts of water, and consult a veterinarian immediately. |
If your vet said to "get whatever" it may be time to find a new vet. Hartz killed a friend's Bichon pup. Watch real close if there's any kind of seisure activity or anything strange call the er vet as soon as you can. They can give meds to relieve some of the symptoms. |
