How do you get your yorkie to take medicine? I need help getting Bailey to take her medicine. I took her to the vets again today for her diarhea and she has a bacterial infection. The vet gave me 3 meds, one is liquid, one is a paste and one is a pill. I cannot get her to take the pill, I put in into her mouth and she gagged it up and spit it out. Should I crush it? I have her on a bland diet of white rice and chicken with a bit of cottage cheese . The vet wants her to stay on it for 3-5 days, then start reintroducing her to her kibble. I can't give her any other foods right now. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you, Michele & Bailey:aimeeyork |
I crush Cali's and put it in her food, but even then sometimes she won't eat the food. I also put a tiny bit of peanut butter on the pill and stick it in her mouth. Usually she ends up eating it because the peanut butter sticks in her mouth. I know how hard it is!!! Good luck! |
I wrap the pill in a little piece of cheese. |
There is also pill pockets. You can get them at petco. |

They are like little treats that are pockets you put pills in and then you close the little flap. If you go to petco.com and you can see the package of them. This is the info on them: Pill Pockets are the safe and delicious way to administer oral medications. Pill Pockets take the stress and mess out of giving your pet his oral medications. They eliminate the need to force a pill down your pet's throat or wrap it in fattening table food. The patented design of the pocket in this soft treat accepts all standard size medications. Once inside the Pill Pocket, just pinch it closed. The Pill Pocket holds the medicine, and the medicine smell, inside. Simply feed to your pet as a treat. Pill Pockets contain probiotics to promote intestinal health. Great taste is guaranteed. Veterinarian designed. All over the United States and Canada, veterinarians have recommended Pill Pockets as the preferred method of delivery for their patients. Val |
Yea, getting a dog to take a pill ought to be fun! This post reminded me of an email I got about giving a cat a pill. Pill pockets sound quite interesting! |
Yeah I just recently used pill pockets for Pete he had to take two pills twice daily for ten days and our vet recommended them. They worked like a charm, luckily Pete never caught me and he really like them. |
NOTHING has worked for me.. no cheese.. nothing!! One day I started talking to one of my regular customers, whom I later found out used to own a dog store. He told me the oldest trick in the book... Crush the pill and mix it in with applesauce... Now, I don't know how your dogs like apples, but Kayah LOVES them... so for me, it was just that easy:) |
Hi, I have three babies and cheese does the trick for the two of them. However, my Trixie won't go near anything if she even thinks a type of med is in her treat, food or whatever. She was sick and I was given pills and a liquid. I was ready to pull my hair out by day 3 with her. Honesty, I tried it all. The cheese, smashing it and etc. Finally, because she was spitting the liquid back out and refused to take the pill I had to get a syringe and open her mouth and shoot the liquid down her throat really fast. With the pill I opened her mouth and was practically putting it down her throat. I'd rub her throat to make sure it went down. The trick was speed. I felt like an abusive mommy but after 3 days and no meds I had no choice. She was sick and not getting better. Perhaps your vet could show you how to give meds without using anything. I know it can be so frustrating when they are refusing. Hope your baby feels better soon and good luck with the meds. |
I put in in cheese spread and then stick it to the roof of Pippa's mouth, She has great fun trying to suck the cheese spread off and doesnt even notice there was a tablet there too |
I always crush the pills and add to a tiny bit of peanut butter. That has always worked for me. I do ask the vet to make sure there is no problem with crushing the pills and so far there never has been. But I know there are some people pills that should not be crushed and need to dissolve slowly. We used to wrap pills in a ball of cheese and that worked for some but then one of them got smart and sucked off all the cheese and spit out the pill. So, we went to crushing and peanut butter. |
Kirby requires the crushing/peanut butter combo, seems to work best for him...sometimes I'll put a pill inside a piece of cooked macaroni, he hasn't figured that one out yet! Ginger, bless her little heart, will usually take the pill just because I want her to...if not, any form of food will do. Good luck! |
My dogs have always liked the pill pockets. I buy the smallest ones which are usually big enough for Sean. If I can't get the small ones then I take a piece off the large ones. They come in bags that seal and keep them fresh and soft so will last for a long time. I always have a bag...just in case. |
Thank you for all your suggestions. I am going to look for those pill pockets today and see how they work for us. Last night I felt so horrible shooting the liquid med down her throat and then trying to get her to take the tablet. (that she kept spitting out) I did finally try peanut butter, it stuck to the roof of her mouth and then she just swallowed it. She doesn't really like cheese, so that didn't work, she just sniffed it and walked away....picky girl. This morning I crushed the pill and mixed it in with her rice and chicken, now I have 2 more to wrestle with her until this evening when I start all over with all 3......sighhh this is worse then trying to give my kids meds when they were toddlers.:) Michele & Bailey:aimeeyork |
