drop of blood Hi I have a 4 month old yorkie I have had her 3 weeks the first day I got her she had blood in her stool I called the breeder and she took her to the vet the next day that gave her albon they did a stool sample and found nothing but still treated her with albon she took it 14 days and now she has started doing it again she eats fine and is very hyper dont act like anything is wrong I will take her to the vet monday to see what is going on any help or advice |
Blood coming out of any orifice (human or animal) is not a good sign. It could be a number of things that may not be testable through a stool sample. Please take your Yorkie to the vest asap and get some blood tests done. I hope everything turns out A-OK!!! ;) |
Albon is usually given for coccidia and since the immune system must overcome the parasite and the meds only interfere with reproduction to keep the numbers in check it can be hard to get rid of. How are her stools? If her stools are loose, I would suspect that she probably still has coccidia or another parasite. |
her stool is hard the drop of blood comes beside of her poop not in it a small amount I will take her to the vet to get checked |
Probably not a parasite then unless the Albon is still working and keeping the diarrhea in check. Closely inspect the anal area and you might be able to see a small cut that is causing the problem. |
Also, if her stool is too hard - add some pure canned pumpkin without the spices to her diet. Constipation coud also lead to small amounts of bleeding. |
vet today I took her to the vet today he says its cocidis (don't know how to spell it) and put her back on albon |
I would talk to the breeder, she really should be responsible for this bill since it's a continuation of the first problem. I'm sure she knew the baby had coccidia on the first vet visit. It can be diagnosed by fecal exam under a microscope for the eggs. |

BabyFidgette, The albon will be fine again. There is nothing to kill coccidia, albon works by interfering with reproduction to keep the numbers down - the dog's immune system must overcome it (like kennel cough) so that is why it is a good idea to give an immune boosting vitamin and herb complex. |
