Opinion on what this is (pictures in the posts) 2 Attachment(s) So last night I picked up Jaden and noticed this very small red irratated area next to his private parts. He doesn't yelp or cry when I touch it but it looks infected. I tried to look closer at it and it looks like it might be a stitch! Its crazy though because when I got him he had been neautered almost 2 weeks before hand and I've had him for just a little over a month now and this has just shown up. It looks like the skin is trying to grow over the "stitch" and that is why its so irratated. I've been putting neosporin on it so I noticed it and it doesn't seem quite as red anymore. When I feel the little black thing it feels hard like a stitch so that was the only thing I could possibly think of. Does anyone else have any clue as to what this might be and what I should do? I've included pictures of it both far away and up close. Any advice would be great! |
Even though its been over a month it could still possibly be an irritation to the stitches. My little boy Pete had a little lump appear around a little black looking stitch somewhere around 2wks to a month after his surgery, I took him to the vet and they said it was completely normal and did nothing. 2 weeks after that it was still there and looked infected so I took him to my new vet (decided I didnt like that vet for many reasons) and he took him in the back and made a small incision and drained what appeared to be just a little puss from some irritation, after that it went away and hasnt been back since. The vet also told me that sometimes the dissolving stitches can take several months to fully dissolve. Good Luck:) |
Thanks for the information, when I was messing with it the other night it looked like a little bit of puss came out of it. The only experience I've ever had with stitches was with my cat and rabbit (years ago) when they were fixed and they never had any issues after their surgery so I didn't know what to make of this. I think I'll give this a few more days and keep putting neosporin on it and if nothing changes I'll take him the vet like you did and see if they'll do anything. If anyone else has any tips on what I should be doing in the meantime they'd be greatly appreciated! |
Ouch!!! the poor little guy. |

I hate to even say it, but the time Maddie had a maggot in her, that is what the sore looked like. I don't think that's what Jaden has because it's not been hot, summer weather going on. Hope it clears up fast, whatever it is!!! |
Judging on the location and the recent neuter I think you're probably right it is a stitch. I would get it opened up by a vet and then treat with an antibiotic ointment. If it was in another area, I would think it looks like a head of a tick left in. |

When I looked closer at it I can almost see a very small knot and it reminds me of the stitches I had in my finger. Same black color and it feels hard like a wire sort of thing not hard like a bugs head or anything like that. I'm going to get in touch with the vet who neutered him tomorrow and see exactly when he was neutered and get his opinion on this as well. That way I'll have that information in case his new vet needs it. The vet who neutered him was where I got him and that was in Washington DC. I don't think I will be driving up there again for an appt! Hope not anyway:rolleyes: Thanks for all the support and prayers! |
I'm sure you can watch it for a while if your dog doesn't seem to be uncomfortable..... but if it doesn't improve - a trip to the vet would probably be in order. It will either get better - or it won't. Carol Jean |
Just wanted to update everyone on Jadens "private" issue. lol It didn't really seem worse and actually with putting neosporin on it seemed like it was getting better but I'm just a paranoid Mommy and it was driving me nuts not knowing if he was 100% OK so we went to the vet today and turns out it was stich that should've disolved and didn't so the vet removed it and Jaden is as good as new! He did find one other stitch that is underneath the skin that hasn't disolved yet but said that to go down so far underneath the skin to remove it would be worse right now than letting it stay. He said that it should disolve in another month or so and if not to come back and he would remove it. Just wanted to let you guys know that he's ok :) |
It looks like suture to me. My cat had one that acted like that. I cleaned it with some peroxide. I cleaned some little scissors and tweezers with alcohol and removed it myself. The thing healed up in a day or two after that. I am a nurse, so I don't mind doing such things! |
Mo had the very same thing happen to him. My dr. took it out. He said sometimes in small dogs they don't dissolve fast enough or something like that. After that he healed right up! Glad he is on the mend! |
