Any experience with a broken leg? We adopted a retired "showgirl" about 6 weeks ago. She took a flying leap off the end of our bed on Monday night and broke her radius and ulna. We rushed her to the emergency vet where they kept her for a couple of hours and splinted it. Showed us the x-rays and said that it is minimally displaced and will probably heal okay in about 6 to 8 weeks. We have an appointment to see our vet on Monday. She has been on a daily a NSAID to keep inflammation down, etc. and seems to be doing all right, but we are still VERY concerned. Our other little guy just can't figure out what is going on and is so very jealous of the attention she is getting. Just wondering if anyone has any input in how to deal with a broken leg. The ER vet said that some doctors want to put pins in, but she didn't really think our little one needed that and we decided not to put her through surgery, etc. Any experiences any of you have encountered would be interesting to hear. |

Hi there, Sorry to hear about your new baby girls troubles. I have had experiance with a broken leg. My little guy broke his when he was 6 months old on the growth plate. He was in the cast for 8 wks. I let him do as he normally did. A little extra attention, but could not give all attention to him where I have to other furbabies in the house. I did not allow him to jump up and down of the furniture or the bed. I would pick him up and then put him down. He would actually run on his broken leg in the cast. He was a hard one to keep down. He had to have his cast changed twice. Just because the doctor wanted to make sure after the swelling went down that the cast fit right. But he did his everyday activities as normal as we could make it for him. Hope this helps. And he was done with pain meds after a few days. Took nothing else for pain. Val and Babybear |

broken leg ZsaZsa broke the growht plate in her leg after a fall from the bed. The surgeon recommended a pin, after her surgery she was down maybe 24 hours. There was no keeping her quiet after, they wanted her kenneled for 6 to 8 weeks, but she had never really been kenneled and we just couldn't do it. She made a complete recovery and is running and jumping along with the rest of the crew. I cringe when they jump off the couch or bed and pray that it doesn't happen again. My little boy, Hobbs, did the same thing when he was a tiny puppy...he took a flying leap off the couch and broke his back right leg. We rushed him to the ER vet who splinted it and told us that our vet might want to do surgery. We took him to our regular vet the following Monday who looked at the x-rays, determined he didn't need surgery, and he resplinted his leg. He ended up being in the splint for about a month. We had to take him in to get the splint replaced once because it got wet during a bath. But after a month was up, he was all well. My vet suggested that we feed him lots of food and treats because the more calories he intakes, the faster the bones would heal. We also had to make sure he didn't run or anything too much because he didn't need to injure it more. Now Hobbs is 14 months old and you would never even know that he ever had a broken leg. Her leg needs surgery! Thanks to all those who have replied to be regarding Lacy's broken leg. We took her to our Vet (whom we have complete confidence in) today and he said he simply could not understand what the emergency Vet was saying. He looked at the original x-rays and then re-x-rayed her in the splint and it is soooo obvious that these fractures cannot heal without being repaired. We are waiting for his phone call to tell us when he can do it. She will need pins and perhaps a plate and external fixation. We are sick at heart, but he says she will recover completely. Having heard favorable reports from all of you, we are trying to be optimistic! Again, thanks for your input. |
