Mastitis? 1 Attachment(s) Lily's 3 puppies are now four weeks old, and this week I have been trying them on a little soft mushy puppy food. They are taking a little but not huge amounts and seem to still be suckling regularly. This morning she seems a little agitated and once again holding onto her favourite squeaky ball, which she had in her mouth all through the birth! The vet says its her security blanket! I have noticed that under the top set of teats is very swollen and firm compared to the other sets which are fairly flaccid, and although I have no previous experience of a whelping bitch my guess is she has developed mastitis. I don't really know anything about the condition and am wondering if it is something I need to call the vet about? Obviously being a Saturday they are closed until Monday. Is this urgent? Shall I call him out as an emergency? or is there something I can be doing myself to help? She is not distressed as such, just seems a bit anxious. She spends fairly long sessions away from her pups, but always going back for regular feedings. Need some advice ASAP please fellow Yorkie owners! |
I don't know much about mastitis, but from what I've read on here, I think you should call your vet! Waiting till Monday wouldn't be a good idea. I'm sure there'll be experienced breeders that will soon see your thread and they know a lot more than I do about this! Good luck and keep us updated! |

We went through this in our last litter...this is what we did (if you cant get a hole of your vet)...try to get the pups to suckle the teat (or teats) that are have it. You can also milk her by hand - not a fun project but it really helps. It's in infection and you have to get the bad milk out (will not hurt the puppies btw). Your vet can give antibiotics to clear it up, but it's better if you can do get it cleared up on your own. We did the above and it was cleared up by the next day. We took her into the vet the next day and they said to just continue what I was doing and that they really don't want antibiotics if they can help it. Call your vet though and see what they say - I would take her temp too just in case! I hope that helps |
Oh I forgot!! They breasts that are affected will hurt too - so she won't like it. You can put a warm wash cloth on them to help with the pain too! |
I say call the vet immediately! My Lily had babies Sat. Oct. 28th and by Monday morning, she had mastitis and her back leg was swollen.....vet said leg was swollen because she layed on that side to nurse......ended up that what happen was the infection from mastitis had traveled to a near lymph node and got in her leg...that is the reason it was swollen! My Lily lasted on 5 days from when her pups were born........vet said that infection can set in within a matter of hours! Please make sure you get vet to look at this!! Lily's pups are 4 weeks old yesterday, we only have 3 left.........it has been a very tough and demanding time for us. |
