After Neuter Question Hi all! Well, Mojo got neutered on Monday and has been doing really well! I was really amazed by how well he was even when I picked him up that day! Boy, what tough little guys they are! Anyway, Mojo is still red and looks alittle swelled around his stitches, which I know is normal....I was just wondering (for those who have had their little guys neutered)...how long before the area starts to look better and get better? Also, how long before a bath. And.....I keep thinking of them.......do they still hike their leg and "hump" (like in Mojo's case...his "love" blanket)? I didn't know if any of that stuff would change or not. Oops...one more....the vet said that once "fixed" their urine won't be the thicker/smelly kind....is this true? Oops....again.....so sorry......Mojo use to have a creamy like stuff (sorry, gross I know) that would be on the end of his wee-wee.....the vet said that was normal for intact males.......does that still happen once they are fixed? Sorry to sound so "neuter-dumb"....just thought I would ask......and okay, I am not wanting to get started on my Thanksgiving dishes! HA! |

Mmmm.. the incision shouldn't really be red - redness is a sign of infection. Is he licking at the incision at all? Swelling and redness could also be a result of the stitches being pulled if he is running or jumping/playing too hard. Oscar was a little red the second day he was home because he was licking his incision the first night - after that, it gradually healed up nicely. He had his stitches out a week later and the scar looked good. It took about 2 or 3 months for the scar to disappear completely - it went through various stages, including having tiny bumps around it (perfectly normal) which went away completely. As far as I can remember, you have to wait until the stitches are out before he can have a bath (basically have to wait until the incision has healed up). Neutering can reduce the frequency of humping/hiking in some males who did it pre-neuter, but it may not put a stop to it completely. It's different for all dogs. Oscar rarely hiked his leg and NEVER humped ANYTHING before his neuter, so I thought I was in the clear - I just now caught him trying to mount Ruthie (keeping in mind, humping isn't a sexual thing 100% of the time - and Ruthie has mounted him too, lol). Mojo's urge to hump his 'love blanket' might be diminished a bit, but may not stop completely (why not just take the blanket away?). I never noticed Oscar's urine to be thicker/stinkier pre-neuter - I think it's the same... and I never noticed a discharge from Oscar's penis either - I'm sure whatever your vet said in this case is accurate. Maybe someone else on here can shed some light on that one... |
