Thrown up twice in the past 5 hours Duke has thrown up twice this evening... today he went to the groomer and also went for his well check-up at the vet. He was tested for heartworms, erlichia, and lyme... all negative. He was given his annual DHP and rabies shots, and was given the bordella/parainfluenza nasal drops. He threw up when we first got home... and we just attributed it to him being car sick and then it was the first time he had ate all day (that we know of) around 4 PM. So, about 30 minutes ago, he threw up again. He's still playful and wanting to eat and drink more. I'm just worried of course! Once every once in a bit, okay... that's fine. But twice? He did have about a 30 mile car trip there and 30 miles back... and it was a bit of a traumatic day for him. There was a chewed-up cough drop wrapper at my mother's house... (this was after he had throw up the first time and before the second time)... that she thought he got into, but the paper wasn't wet so I didn't think he did. If he throws up anymore, I'm going to call the vet. I just wondered if it could be from the shots that is making him have an upset tummy? Any suggestions for what to do? Thanks! |
Just read what someone else wrote about having an allergic reaction to the shots... Duke is just throwing up his food, no strange colors or foams... I'm just worried to death! He's had his shots before, but this is the first time I have had them done since I am his second Mom. |
Also, he is eating right now... as far as I can tell, he has no facial swelling. What would you guys do? |
Awww, poor darling:( I'd just keep a close eye on him, make sure that he's staying hydrated and try to keep him calm. If he continues to vomit, then it may be time for the emergency vet. That's a big day for a little one, and with all the vaccinations, it might have been too much for his little tummy. Keep us posted. I'm sure that someone more experienced than me will come along soon with some great advice:) |
He ate some more and he drank a bunch, but then he just threw up again... for the third time. :( This time it was more liquidy, like water and not the food. I'm going to try to get ahold of the vet. |

She said for safety, it would be the best bet to bring him in tonight. But, since his puke was the same color as his food, he just ate some chicken, drank some water, and went outside and had a solid bowel movement, we could wait until the morning and then take him in if he was still not holding his food. She said that the vaccinations are probably the cause and it's just an upset stomach, but you can never be sure. So, if he does it anymore tonight, I am wanting to take him in right away. My boyfriend says he is okay because he hasn't had a change in his behavior and thinks that the day was just traumatic on him in general and so does my mother. So, I doubt I will get much sleep tonight and I'll be keeping a close eye on him. The good thing though... the house is getting very clean since I cannot sleep now and know I won't until he has kept his food down for at least 5 or 6 hours. I may even get some Christmas presents wrapped. He also has decided only to throw up on blankets, so... everything is getting washed. I'm so worried because I know the throwing up isn't normal, but at the same time, he's still eating, drinking, and playing... so, I'm not completely spazzed out, yet. He's also a bigger Yorkie, so while is still a small dog, he's not tiny. It's driving me nuts though because it was his well check-up today and they told me he was super healthy, and now he can't hold down his food. :( He'll be okay though... |
wow all those shots in one visit??? I would never recommend getting the Booster, Rabies and Bordetella all at the same time...this is so much for their little systems. Its always best to do one at a time a week or two apart.... Keep a close eye on your little one until you see the vet in the am. |
Well, he just threw up again... he threw up under the table, behind the couch, in his crate... I'm ready to take him to the vet. now but I know they will open in 6 and a half hours... I just don't know if I can wait. Ugh... it's been a horrible night! |
its not abnormal for a pup to have a slight fever, seem a bit depressed (sleepy) and throw up their food after a shot...but have three at once may be a reaction or overload...youre the best one to determine if she/he can wait until the morning...just make sure you keep him hydrated. |
Oh, he wants to eat and drink everything. He wants to eat his vomit when he throws it up and we're having a terrible time keeping him from biting our hands off when we try to clean it up. I tried giving him boiled chicken and that didn't seem to help... threw it up about two hours after eating it as well. He was up playing a little bit ago and now he's sleeping peacefully beside of me, but I'm a worried mama. This was the first time I've taken him for shots even though he's 5 and the vet. said nothing about them having a reaction to them; I didn't even think about the three at once. We did refuse the bordatella because the tech. said only to get if it they are going to be boarded with other dogs... but the vet. came in and was talking about how he needed to get vaccinated for kennel cough as well and I had no idea it was the same thing until I looked on my bill. Oh well... can't change it now. Oh, and just in addition... he has had shots before... I just became his owner within the past year. Didn't want to make it sound like he had never had shots in all 5 years of his life. I'd call his previous owners and see if he ever had a bad reaction to shots, but since it's 2 AM now and they have two children, one 3 months and one 18 and they wouldn't be too happy with my phone call right now. |
Hope Duke has made a full recovery by now. The DHP is the "new" distemper, hepatitis, parvo vaccine that lasts for three years and is not given yearly so that should be good. Your vet didn't give Corona or Lepto which is also good, wondering why he gave the Kennel Cough since it's a noncore vaccine and only good for 6 months and usually only given if you board your dog and then it's best to give it 3 weeks prior to the boarding. Many dogs come down with respiratory ailments after receiving this vaccine. I agree with the others, only one injection at a time, everything I have read says 2 weeks minimum in between, preferably 3 weeks to give their immune system time to recover. |
