My Allie is in heat My 1 year old Yorkie is in heat but has a liver disease and is considered a high risk dog. For that reason the vet will not sedate her for the neutering surgery. Can anyone tell me how many "periods" Yorkies have a year and how long they last? Any information on this topic would be greatly appreciated because I know nothing about dogs in heat. |
What kind of liver disease does your pup have? What kind of sedation, intubation, gas? |
Heat cycles last 21 days (3 weeks) and they will have them every 6 months. Since spay is not an option, keep panties on her during this time. Also, keep any and all males away from her. |
She has microvascular dysplasia. It is were her liver does not clean all the toxins out of her blood. Basically she has an internal liver shunt and since she is so small (4 pounds) they can not do surgery on her. |
There are a lot of yorkies with MVD and they only that it can be properly diagnosed is with exploratory surgery. You might want to find a specialist in your area that deals with gastro issues. My yorkie who is less than 2 pounds was diagnosed with MVD through a bile acid test and it was confirmed with the liver biopsy. Her MVD is mild she has no symptoms even her bile acid levels are not off the chart. Her prognosis is good. She underwent her spay at the same time as the biopsy and got her baby teeth pulled. She did well and two weeks later you would never know she had major surgery. Find a specialist that is more equipped to perform the surgery. I just never heard not performing surgery with a liver disease, that is usually how the diagnose is made. |
