Lucy has to have tests Monday! Lucy is 9 months old and has never been sick. She had a sore throat and threw up bile at least once per day. I took her to the vet where she got an antibiotic shot and pills for a week. I gave them all to her, but she still throws up. She threw up 3 times during the night and once today. I got off work early and took her to the vet again. Her throat is fine now, but the vet said her stool sample looked a little "off". She wants to do tests Monday (blood work, x-rays, etc) and wants me to bring her at 9:00 and pick her up after work. She said she could have a parasite of some sort and said she wants to make sure she gets the right meds to take care of it. She gave her special food for the weekend (easily digested) and albon to take for a week. She also gave me worm medicine to give her in the morning. She didn't want to give it to her in the office because Lucy threw up while there and she wanted to give her time to settle down before taking it. Does all this sound "right" to ya'll? I don't have much experience with sick Lucy because she's always been bouncy and happy. She's breaking my heart right now because I had to put her in her x-pen because of the diarrhea :( |
They can test for most parasites with you right there - there is one I think that doesn't come up in the fecal but most of the time the vet can tell if your dog has parasites by a fecal - has she done a fecal test ??? What tests are they running - bloodwork ?? I just had basic bloodwork for my Chanel and I had my answers in 15 minutes while I waited but I don't understand WHY are they not ruling out the parasites first ???? Is she really sick ? If she is ...then that's different but IF I were you - I would talk to another vet on the phone and see how they'd take care of you. It bothers me that she can't even tell you that there are or aren't parasites -that's always the first thing they rule out - at least in MY LIMITED experience with 4 dogs in the last 11 years. good luck - |
She did a fecal while I was there and said it looked a little bloody? She wants to try the easy to digest food and albon over the weekend to see if there's any improvement in the diarrhea and throwing up. I asked her about liver shunt because that's my nightmare but she said Lucy didn't have one. She seems to think it's gastrointestinal. I got my new yorkie puppy about the time Lucy got sick and she said it's possible that Rebel brought a "bug" home with him. (He's not sick at all) I'm a little confused too. There's not a 24 hr vet around here, and I'm going to leave Lucy for the bloodwork, x-rays, etc Monday.....but I'm going to call a vet a few hours from here and talk to him. My daughter in law's mother raises shih tzus and that's the vet she uses. The vet here couldn't do the bloodwork this afternoon because they have to send it off and it was already 4:00 on a Friday afternoon. She gave me her after hours number and told me to call her if ANYTHING at all came up which made me feel better. |
Sounds to me like you have a good vet. She sounds concerned, thorough, and is going to do further testing - At this point, I wouldn't worry about the names of all the tests, etc., or need to know all the details about everything that is going to be done. I have great vet(s) and trust them totally. I would just let them take over and trust them to do everything that needs to be done. Hopefully, your vet can quickly find out what your little puppy's problem is and take care of it. Good luck - and keep us posted on what you find out. Carol Jean |

Thanks, Lucy seems to feel much better this morning. I let her sleep in her X-pen last night and she didn't throw up or have diarrhea during the night. I let her out to do her business this morning and it looked ok, so I'm just watching her really closely until Monday. Kim |
I'm sooo glad she's better, Good luck on Monday ! |
