After Surgery Help I'm taking Max to the vet tomorrow for his neuter surgery, and just wanted to know if any of you had any tips on how to keep him from hurting himself after I bring him home. Should I keep him inside for a while? Is there anything I should watch for? He's very playful, and I just don't want him to break his stitches and hurt himself. Thanks for your help, Matt |
The day you bring him home and possibly the following day he likely won't feel like doing too much of anything anyways - he will likely be quite tired and sleep quite a bit. It's really difficult to stop these little guys when they're wanting to play. If I remember correctly, I don't think he is supposed to spend a great deal of time outside anyways until his incision heals up (to prevent infection) - someone correct me if I'm wrong here... Maybe have things to keep him occupied that don't require running/jumping around - like a Kong filled with healthy treats or a bullystick or pigsear to chew on. Just keep an eye on his incision - watch for any redness, irritation, bleeding, or other signs of infection. Watch that he is not licking his incision! This will also cause infection. I wouldn't worry too much about the stitches simply pulling out - I think he'd have to be some pretty rigorous activity in order for that to happen. |
thanks for the advice. he's home now, and definitely keeping him from licking the stitches is going to be the hardest part. luckily i dont have classes or work tomorrow so i can be with him for the whole weekend. -matt |
i have a little girl, but i think the licking issues are the same! i put a "onesie" on her... one of those undershirts for babies.. that go around and snap up. layla was about 3.5 lbs when she was spayed... and she wore a premie size...i just went to wal mart... 7 bucks i got 2. I unsnapped them when she went outside to pee... but it was a lifesaver for overnight when i coudln't watch her all the time! good luck with your little man! |
Thanks, I had to get him an E-collar. I went to the Vet and picked up a soft one, but he figured out that he could get around that by biting it! So then I had to go back and get one of the hard ones. Everytime I take it off he goes straight to licking. The vet said to keep it on until the stitches come out. Do you think I could take it off any earlier? I feel bad having him wear it all the time. Thanks. |
