My yorkie pup has spirochetes..
 
I just got my baby yorkie pup and that day he started sneezing. The first night he was coughing. I took him to the vet the next day and the doctor said he has spirochetes. :( He's taking anti-biotics but it seems to have gotten worse. :( It seems like he has a hard time breathing. Every so often he coughs and coughs like he is trying to barf but nothing comes up. Anyone ever had a yorkie with spirochetes? is this normal?:(

I think spirochetes bacteria is linked to lyme disease and transmitted by a tick. What kind of an antibioitics did he put him on?

Treatment

No one single antibiotic will work against all cases of Lyme disease and the medication and duration of treatment is very much individualized. The spirochete has a long generation time of 12-24 hours in vitro (possibly longer in vivo) and may undergo periods of dormancy, during which time antibiotics will be ineffective against the bacteria. For these reasons long treatment periods are necessary to maker sure the spirochetes are eradicated and to prevent relapses. Drug concentrations may have to be increased because of the deep tissue penetration by Borrelia burgdorferi. Four types of antibiotics are in general use for treatment of Lyme:

Tetracyclines such as doxycyline
Penicillins, usually amoxicillin given with probenecid
Third generation cephalosporins such as ceftriaxone
Erythromycin and other macrolides given with chloroquine or amantadine

Oh no!!!!!!! I'm so sorry to hear that your baby is sick. :( I sure do hope he gets well very soon!

he wasn't getting any better. he has been coughing uncontrollably. He coughed up his bile (green liquid). :( i talked to the vet and they said he has kennel cough. he's taking some antibiotics and cough suppressent now. ...so far..he's not coughing...but now he's barking here and there. ....i hope he will get better.

What cough suppressant is working? Is it a prescription or over the counter? Glad he's doing better. Thanks for the update.

I got the cough suppressant from the vet. He gave us 5 Torbugesic 1mg tablets and told us to give him 1/4 of the tablets 3-4 times a day.

I hear, although expensive, that is the best. Keep an eye on his stools it's known to cause constipation so you might want to add a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (no spices) twice a day, if necessary. Poor little baby must be pretty drugged up with it since it is actually more powerful than demerol or morphine. Keep us updated on how he is doing.
