Should I be worried? Hi again guys! I'm not really sure wheter I should post this here as I don't think it's an emergency but I'm just curious whether I should be worried or not. Little Nemo loves to play tug-of-war and while playing with him I tugged it and he went a little nutty licking at his jaw and trying to swallow. I checked his mouth out and he was bleeding like he'd lost a tooth or something and I panicked. A couple of minutes later the bleeding stopped and he went for his toy again and even finished his food and water yet he continues to lick his chops from time to time. I can't tell whether one of his baby teeth was pulled during the tug (hopefully not one of his permanent) or whether perhaps it was just loosened... frankly it wasn't that hard a tug so it just freaked me out. Could he have bitten his tongue? He seems to be in good spirits and is looking for more play at the tug-of-war but mommy is feeling gun shy. Am I overreacting or should I take him for a visit to the vet if he continues to lick his chops? It worries me because it's not something he normally does. Thanks in advance for any help you could offer. |
How old is the pup? Chances are, just a baby tooth was pulled out. |
I would try to examine his mouth to see exactly what went on. Get some help and wrap him in a towel. If it is a broken permanent tooth then the remaining part will have to be removed or it will get infected. If it was just a baby tooth that you helped out then the remaining root will probably dissolve on its own, but not always. I would find out the location and then check the gum line every day or two to look for any swelling indicating infection (abscess). If he avoids eating hard dry food or seems to be eating only on one side for more than a day or two I would take him to the vet. |
The little baby turns 5 months old next week. I freaked out because I thought most of his baby teeth had fallen already but I guess there were more. He's extremely playful so I've calmed down quite a bit but he does seem to still be bleeding a bit, I just can't tell from where... my brother noticed when he started biting at his arm and left a little bit of blood behind, doesn't seem to be bothering him as he still wants to play. Just out of curiousity, it's not that easy to pull a permanent tooth is it? It's been so long since I've had a puppy that I have no clue. |
They say teething lasts from 4 to 6 months, but in my experience it's longer than that so I would say most likely it is a baby tooth, but the remaining root can still cause some damage so keep watching it. It is highly unlikely that it was a permanent tooth from what you are describing. |

Just a quick update... Nemo is a-okay... looks like it was a baby tooth indeed. In a couple of days the other tooth was coming down which was a great relief. Thanks again for your help guys :D |
Piccolo was 9 months old when he was neutered and the vet removed 3 baby teeth during the surgery. |
Something similar happened to CAli a couple oc months ago while we were playing. She had retained all of her baby teeth and we were playing and all of a sudden she yelped and started licking and swallowing and bleeding some. I looked and in the toy was her baby tooth. Glad to hear that's what it was. |
