Cali had bloody diarrrea WHen I got home yesterday, Cali had a large volume of diahrrea with a lot of deep red blood. I called my vets and they said to bring it in and they would test for parasites and bacteria. I waited for the results and the vet came out and tld me there were a lot of bacteria in her stoll and it was very active. SO they gave me Metronidazole for her. I started it last night and she hasn't pooped since. But just know she threw up foamy tannish color liquid. She is eating but not her whole meal and she has been acting fairly normal. I did a search on the meds on here and it looks like some people have had their dogs throw up from the meds. Has any one else esperienced this? I am trying not to panic and call the vet again but will if she won't eat her 2:30 meal or throws up again. Thanks |
Poor baby! Sorry I'm no help, I haven't had that type of problem with Bengi. I hope she get's better; keep us updated! :getwellso |
OH poor Cali . . . . . Tiger had that too and with medications he was back to his normal self in no time. Sending warm kisses from my babies to yours :) |
Poor Cali...I hope shes feeling better soon |
Here's a link to the medicine. Always give with food. I hope she is better soon. It says side effects are rare unless it is an unusually high dose - check the dosage. http://www.marvistavet.com/html/metronidazole.html |
I am sorry Cali is not feeling well. Magic has has bloody diahrrea once before and used this medication for it. (In fact she just finished a round of this medicine this weekend for a bout of diahrrea - but this time not bloody.) When Magic takes this medicine, she often goes a day without pooping....but when she finally does it is normally back to normal. She has never thrown up the medicine....but has thrown up bile and it is normally when she has an empty stomach. It does take Magic almost a full day to get back to eating normally. I hope Cali starts feeling better soon!! If you are unsure....I would call the vet just to make sure. |
Forgot to add the suggested dosage - Metronidazole (Flagyl) Dog, cat Dogs: 11.5 mg/lb twice daily for 5 days. Cats:5.5-11.5 mg/lb twice daily for 5 days. Do not give to pregnant animals, puppies or kittens. |
I hope your little girl is better soon. |
I too pray your little girl will get better soon. |
Poor Cali :( How long after she takes the medicine is she throwing up? She could be throwing up the medicine, so she might need another antibiotic. Rocky and I hope she gets better! |
Thanks for the well wishes and good info. I just checked her dosage and it is 62.5 mg 2 times a day. She is almost 5 lbs so it sounds about right. I just got her to eat a little but still hasn't pooped and not her self yet. Hopefully tomorrow she will start feeling better. |
It took Sissy a full day to be her normal self when she was on this medication with Giardia and lots of bloody diarrhea. Did your vet see Cali, or did you just take the stool sample in? If she's not herself by tomorrow, she might need a little jolt of subcuteanous fluids to help her out. Sissy got this because of the diarrhea she had and I think that helped more than anything. The meds did not make her vomit, but that is when she stopped eating her dry kibble and I had to start cooking for her. Sometimes the meds can cause anorexic behavior...... We'll be thinking of both of you. Please keep us informed and give Cali a big hug!! |
Poor little Cali...I hope she's feeling better soon! |
I hope Cali is feeling better real soon.. lots of kisses and hugs oxoxo Gina & Gucci |
Just had to give my cat some medicine for a UTI infection. She started throwing up shortly after I started giving it to her....so now I had pee and puke all over my basement (where she is banned until she starts feeling better) I told the vet aboutthis and he said I should stop giving her the meds. So maybe you should check with the vet about this....maybe shes allergic to the meds? Hope she feels better soon.... |
I sure hope cali is feeling better, Lillie and I send her hugs! |
My pup had that they said her stomach was scratched and they gave her special food. |
Just checking to see how Cali is doing :) |

Just wondering how Cali is doing today ??? |
Thanks for all the responses. Cali is eating better today and had a normal poop but she is still not playing much at all. Hopefully the meds are making her tired. |
UPDATE! Cali seemed good last night and this morning. Now she won't eat and won't play at all. I think the medicien really makes her feel bad. One more day of it. If she doesn't seem better by morning or gets worse tonight I will take her to the ER vet. |
Sorry to hear Cali is sick! Poor baby. Maddie has been on that medication a lot and she didn't throw up at all from it. I hope Cali is back to herself and feeling good really soon! |
