Tobi got the itches

Tobi has always had a habit of chewy at his paws for whatever reason but recently he has really been acting like he has flees.
But I checked him thoroughly several times and can find no trace of flees.
Could it be skin allergies? I bathe him once a week or every other week with a mild flee soap and then he also goes once a month to the hair dressers for clean and clip.
What should I do? Take to vet, change soap, any ideas would be appreciated.
Also someone told me that a crushed baby aspirin is ok to give dogs when they are not feeling well. Is this true? if so, how many just one or two? Tobi is 7lbs adult.
thanks!!

Have you had him checked by your vet to rule out parasites, mange, mites and things like that? It sounds like it could be food allergies. What do you feed him? If your food contains corn that could be the problem. About the baby aspirin...please check with your vet before giving him anything.

sounds like you might have some shampoo left on the feet after a rinse.
that has made Ahia chew at her feet before. I cut & pasted this from a web site. try switching to a different shampoo also it could be irritating the feet using a flea shampoo all the time. Fleas don't like the vinegar either.

vinegar rinse does a great job of cutting the shampoo, reduces rinse time, and relieves the itching and scratching. However, when using the vinegar rinse, you must be careful not to pour it over your dog's head, especially not in the eyes; and your dog will smell like vinegar afterwards. The vinegar rinse is made by combining 1(one) cup of vinegar and 1(one) gallon of water. Do not use vinegar straight. It must be diluted.]

my mom's yorkie has the itchy paw problem. she takes a prescription allergy pill. i would go see the vet.

Peanut used to do that until we found out he has food allergies. So we had to change his food with out corn....:)

Lacy's Mom 09-25-2006 07:53 PM

Definitely could be a reaction to the flea shampoo or contact dermatitis from a chemical he is being exposed to on your carpet, floors or grass.

If it is just the feet he is licking it is usually a food allergy. Does the food you are feeding contain corn? If so try switching to a food with no corn. Most food allergies are to the protein in their food so if your food has chicken, switch to a different protein source like lamb that he hasn't been fed and his body hasn't created an allergy against.

I would also put pure aloe vera on his feet to try to keep him from licking them. It is safe to lick, but has a bitter taste.

I will take him to the vet to get check. Dobt give him any aspirin before consulting your vet. oatmeal shampoo works for the itches. Have you checnge his food recently? I heard some can be allergic to the corn and gluten on the kibble. Good luck.

Tobi's food

I have always, always had a hard time with his eating. Vet even had me make him beef and rice as a pup to get him to gain weight.
About a year ago I starting feeding him Caesars. He really seems to enjoy it. His paw chewing has been going on since a pup. He doesn't chew to point of injury or even irrating the skin. He justs licks and chews at them.
My concern though now is all of a sudden he is scratching at his side like he is being bit. He will sometime actually jump up and scratch madly. I have only seen that kind of reaction from animals that had flees. But as I stated pretty positive there are no flees.
I can switch my flee shampoo and see if that works. If not then will take to vet and see if he can determine anything.
Thanks!

Caesars is the doggie equivalent of McDonald's!! You really should look into switching your pup to a healthier food. Even if it's not causing the itchies, it'll be better for him in the long run! A lot of us here use Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Merricks, Innova, etc. You can do a search as there are many threads on it. As far as a wet food goes, my picky eater loves Blue Buffalo, which you can find at Petsmart.

please explain... chicken soup? actual chicken soup? are you mixing it with something the merricks or innova? Is the merricks or innova dry or wet food? I usually have to mix his dry with wet to get him to eat it. very stubborn he is.
I will certainly look for this blue buffalo. thanks!

Lacy's Mom 09-26-2006 12:35 PM

No, its not actual chicken soup, just the name.

ok that sounds good and I will check it out. What about shampoos? is there a particular one that is good for their skin? is there anthing lotion/conditioner or something I can do to help promote non dry skin?
Someone at work told me to mix a raw egg in with his meal once a week but that don't sound too good to me. Any thoughts appreciated!

Oatmeal based shampoos are good for itching, but dry skin is better taken care of from the inside out with a good quality dog food. Missing Link is a great supplement you can buy that really helps the skin and coat, but there are many supplements just look for the keywords Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. The raw egg yolk is fine to add, but not the raw egg white (the albumin blocks biotin which will actually cause harm to the coat).
