Help! OK, guys...I'm looking to ya for help.... All day Saturday, Sadie had diarrhea. She didn't eat anything except a couple of small pieces of treats when we came in from outside. Yesterday I gave her a little bit of the high-fiber food that the emergency vet gave me when I had to take her in a couple of months ago. She ate it up & it has helped a little, but we still don't have "normal" poo. Suggestions? I really don't want to have to take her to the vet if I don't have to. Just wondered what else you suggest I try. THANKS in advance! |
I would cook chicken and rice. Boil chicken breast and mix some with white rice. Keep her on that until her stools get back to normal and then start adding her regular food. I have to say I don't know another breed who gets the diahrea like Yorkies. Buddy has it at least every other month and I just don't know why. Good luck. |
How much do you usually give him when you give him chicken/rice? Sadie will be in HEAVEN if I do that for her b/c I NEVER give her people food. She'll think it's the greatest thing ever. |
Girl, I feel your pain. Rocky had diarrhera all day Saturday. My mom's vet gave us some doggy imodium, which help alot. My mom just had to pick the med up, not vet visit. We just feed him some hamburger and rice until his tummy settled down. The vet said that he either ate something or it was the stress of Joe and I being gone and he was staying at my mom's house. I hope she feels better soon. |
You might throw in some plain yogurt if you have any at home. It's supposed to return the good bacteria to the intestines. Muffin used to get it once in awhile and I'd give her just a little pepto. So far, (knock on wood) Kacee hasn't had it. |
Here is something to keep for emergencies, but not to replace your vet: http://www.geocities.com/angeljulie2/firstaid.html |
My vet said I coould feed mine chicken and rice and cottage cheese when they had diahrea. I also gave them a little bit of pepto bismal |

Buddy gets 1/2 cup of food 2x a day. I would give him mostly rice and dice up chicken breast to equal 1/2 c. 1/2 hr before I would give him 1/2 tablet of pepto bismor, to help settle the stomach. It works everytime. Crush up the tablet into powder and put it into Sadie's mouth. Buddy is 13lbs so if she is smaller only give 1/4 tablet. It's for diahrea and upset stomach. Who knows what they might eat outside. Even watching him he gets things. They are so fast. Hope she feels better soon. |
Try the chicken and rice it will help if it is just a stomach upset. If it continues it is probably a bacteria or parasite of some kind so don't let it go for more than 48 hours, or less if diarrhea is severe or she is not eating. I have had Yorkies that just can't have treats so discontinue the treats and when you reintroduce them watch and make sure the treats aren't the problem. Also give some Nutrical or Nutristat to stimulate her appetite. If the diarrhea is frequent, give Pedialyte to restore the electrolyte balance. Beneficial bacteria is also a good suggestion found in yogurt (sometimes causes diarrhea though) - also available in a tube called Benebac which might be a better alternative right now with the diarrhea. I have given my adults a 1/2 tablet of Immodium AD with my vet's permission when I was sure it was just something they ate. I wouldn't give an anti-diarrheal, but one or two times because if it is a bacterial infection or parasite then diarrhea is the body's way of ridding itself and will only prolong the diagnosis and cure. |
