Basil has pancreatitis really bad....first post...please help My name is Mary Linn and I am a proud mama of a 3 1/2 yr old named Basil. She started vomitting last sunday night so bad so I rushed her monday morning into the vet. She has Pancreatitis really badly and is still not out of the hospital. What was the longest anyone had to leave their pup for this? She kept food down on friday but then saturday started all over again. I'm in need of serious help with this. She is my angel. I lost my husband a year and half ago and he gave her to me for christmas before he passed away. I can't loose her!! Please help with any info about how long it takes to recover from this and what kinds of things the vet had to do to get them better. She's always had a sensitive stomach which is what is causing her to not be able to take the meds orally. As long as they are intravenous, she's fine. The only thing is that she seems to vomit every night at the same time. I'm wondering if I shouldn't switch vets because she doesn't seem to be getting any better. *sigh. :-( |
I hope Basil is better by the time you read this. My first Yorkie has pancreatitis and survived it. She was very, very sick and had to stay in the "hospital" for a couple of days on IVs. But she did recover. The important thing we learned was not to allow people to feed her stuff that she liked but that was not good for her. When she finally got well we put her on a strict diet of dog food only, and then only a brand recommended by the vet. We gave her treats only on very special occasions and then very sparingly. She was such a little chow hound that it was hard to deny her but it was for her own good. She lived a good number of years after the pnacreatitis and we loved her very much. |
Welcome to the group, so sorry you had to post your first post on bad terms. Im right outside of philadelphia in NJ, Did you take her to the university of Penn? She should be in good hands if shes there. I have a german shepherd who had a few bouts of this in the past, hes alot bigger then a yorkie and has alot more to go on when he gets sick. He had it for almost 2 weeks, he would get better and then get worse again. I got lucky and he was able to keep water and his meds down. She needs to stay in the hospital so they can keep her hydrated, its going to take a few days or more. Dont try and take her out early, she needs those IV's. I wish I had more to offer but I am sending prayers for Basil |

Me again - what kind of food are you feeding her ? From what I've read - Lots of people who's dogs suffer from this use Hills R/D food.....and NO treats - but you probably already have her on a special diet right ? I know you must be very worried right now but IF you have time - spend a few minutes using the search function in the blue bar and type Pancreatitis in - you'll pull up lots more threads on it here. |
Bless your heart...this post just makes me so sad. I lost one at 6 1/2 to pancreatitis and my 5 1/2 yr old went to the hospital with it. I think V posted the link in her note to you. Thank God she got well. Please get a second opinion as I feel like she should be much better in this length of time. NEVER give people food...Please keep us updated and you and your baby will be in my thoughts and prayers. |

QUOTE] My shepherd was given the Purina EN and he REFUSED to eat it, he would even dump the bowl and try to bury it if that food was in there. Tried the hills to but he hated it too. LOL however my yorkies thought they had hit the jackpot when he dumped it. Go figure the one who needed it wouldnt touch it but the ones who didnt wanted it so badly |
Mary Linn, I am so sorry that your little Basil is not feeling good. I wish I could help, but I know absolutely nothing about pancreatitis. But there are many members here that have been thru what you are going thru and should be able to help. I am also sorry you lost your husband. I know how hard it is for you right now. I lost my husband last xmas, so please, feel free to PM me if you want to talk. I will keep you and Basil in my prayers. Take care, Sweetie. |
I am so sorry to hear about your husband and now this. I wil pray he makes a complete recovery soon. |
I have personally never dealt with pancreatitis, but Lacy could become violently ill if she ate anything other than her dog food. Luckily, it never got to the point of having to have her hospitalized. Don't have any advice to offer, but do talk with the vet and voice your concerns and ask if maybe there is something else they could test for. Sorry, to hear about the loss of your husband and I will keep you and Basil in my prayers. Please keep us posted as you get information. Here on YT we will continue to think about her and pray for you both. |
Just checking to see how Basil is doing this morning. Thinking and praying for you both. (((HUGS))) |
