Human Meds for dogs?? Aspirin??
 

Okay, I didn't know if this was the right place to post this or not....sorry if it isn't (Admin: please move if needed).

I "searched" for all past posts regarding a human medicine list or what was okay for dogs to take (I am sure I seen that posted somewhere before), but I couldn't come up with anything!!:(

Anyway, this question is regarding my 100 pound black lab.........

He is having problems with his back legs (hips)......and we were told to give him aspirin for this, but I can not remember how much and couldn't find a chart on how much to give per weight.

Does anyone know OR know where I can find out this information? I thought I would check here before I called the vet again....hate to feel like an idiot for asking again! :cool:

I checked on a first aid sheet I had and itis one tablet of asprin per 60 lbs twice a day. Dont give Ibprophin, aleve or tylenol only asprin.

Thanks! The list I had only said Bufferin (which, I guess is asprin).
I know they said not to use anything but asprin and then it should be the older powder ones (not the newer coated ones).

Could you post a copy of your list or maybe where I can find one?

It should be buffered aspirin, not coated because their body's can't digest the coating for some reason and they will pass through "unused". The dosage is 5 mg. per pound so you will have to check the strength of the aspirin you will be buying and go from there. Here's a good link to buffered aspirin and other household meds.

Hey there ...my vet always send me home with ONE baby asprin to cut up when the girls had their shots - Poor Guy - hopefully the asprin will act as an anti-inflamitory as well as relieve his pain.

He is actually feeling better.....romping and running around, as usual.

Both, him and our German Shepard, have been sleeping in our downstairs since it has been cold here at night....theat helps too!

He slept all night last night, without whimpering and such.....so that is a good thing! I think it might be from all that time staying in a cage, but I don't know - he is free to roam and run here.....I know he lost some weight after we brought him home (from being free to run and play), but I think he has gained most back.........such a big baby!

Hi I am new to this site and I live in the UK (sorry to say!!!) I am also a nurse, re your question about giving a dog human asprin? I would say yes it is okay to give a dog asprin, but you need to get the dosage right, eg, I had an elderly cocker spanial and I gave him half a 20mg tab every day for 18 months and it helped his bad legs, but he was a big old boy so ask the vet before you administer any drugs. have you tried hip chips. they are supposed to be good for dogs with arthritis.

my rottie has hip pain when it gets cold we have a med from the vet called rimadyl 100mg it says 1 2x daily but i give her 1/2 one when she has pains they help out

I was given that once because our shepherd pulled a muscle. AFTER I found out that it can kill some dogs I never gave it to him again. Some dogs can have a bad reaction to it so you have to be careful when giving it to them.

Already - I see too many different answers to be comfortable with...

Check with your vet - and give your pet the correct dosage....especially if he's going to need to take it long term.

Aspirin has a lot of side effects and the wrong dosage can cause more problems than it solves......and serious ones at that!

PS: I have looked this up on the Internet before - and even on the Internet, I have seen many different dosages recommended for our pets. This is all the more reason I would check with my vet.

And please remember - a good vet may not give everyone of his patients the same amount of aspirin or any other drug........ different drugs are given in different dosages for different medical problems...and are given according to weight, etc....this is especially important. Plus - many drugs are increased or lowered after a period of time - depending on the dog's response to the drug.

***** Enteric-coated aspirin??? A lot of people's stomachs just can't tolerate aspirin .... so, they take the enteric-coated aspirin. Because of the coating, this pill doesn't dissolve in the stomach, but dissolves later on in the intesting (this avoids the stomach discomfort that many people experience taking aspirin). ...but they still get the benefits of the aspirin. A lot of our cardiac patients who need to take an aspirin a day take the coated aspirin - it works fine for them.

I rarely take an aspirin - but I do know that if I have a splitting headache - I don't want to take a coated one -- why? Because it won't dissolve right away - and I'll have my headache for a long time before that aspirin ever gets into my system.
