wheezing I took my nyc doggie to Pennslyvania for the weekend to my parents and when he breathes I hear a wheezing sound.. He is 5 yrs old.. I'm very worried.. what should i do :( |
Does it sound almost like a cough? Could it be kennel cough? You might want to take him to the vet to see if they can give him some antibiotics. |
Here's a link you might find helpful on wheezing. Maybe it's an allergy reaction since you took him to Pennsylvania. Maybe Children's Benadryl would help (dosage range 1/2 mg to 2 mg per pound of body weight every 8 hours) Hope he's better soon. Keep us posted. Dogs can't tell you when they're sick, but they may wheeze, cough and gag. Learn to differentiate between these three sounds to find out what your puppy needs. What causes my dog to wheeze? Wheezing is a high-pitched whistling sound created by airflow through constricted breathing tubes. If your dog has an attack of wheezing that lasts more than 30 minutes, treat it as an emergency and seek veterinary attention as soon as possible. If your dog doesn't wheeze on a regular basis and has an attack that lasts less than 30 minutes, try to determine what brought on the attack. Causes that could bring on wheezing include: Cold or sinus infection Tissue inflammation brought on by pollen grain allergies or paint fumes Inhaled foreign bodies such as rug fibers or grass that are caught in the nose Asthma Infections such as tuberculosis and pneumonia Tracheal damage How can I soothe my dog's wheezing? If you determine the wheezing isn't an emergency, soothe your dog during the attack. Wheezing due to tissue inflammation: Turn on a humidifier or place your dog in a steamy bathroom. Steam will help open air passageways and make breathing easier. Wheezing due to allergies, colds and asthma: Determine the possible causes and remove them from your home. Your dog may be responding to dust, pollen, household cleaners or other irritants. Things such as cigarette smoke and incense are also common offenders. Wheezing due to tracheal damage: A tight collar and leash can injure or even fracture your dog's trachea. Keep the leash off and put on a humidifier before visiting the vet. |

Don't panic yet. It might just be a little congestion. Let us know what you find out, though. OK?:) |
I hope he is ok....Let us know! |
wheezing well we went to the vet.. he mentioned arithmia?? spelling? he also mentioned that his teeth are in bad shape and need to be cleaned. He gave me clavimax and told me to come back in a week :( |
Since the vet prescribed Clavamox - he must suspect an upper respiratory infection and not just allergies. Arythmia is dealing with the heart and could possibly be caused by poor dental hygiene because of the bacteria. Get his teeth cleaned after you get him healthy. Hope the antibiotics start to work quickly and clear up his chest and make him feel better. Did the vet let you know of anything you could give him for his wheezing to open up his airways while you're waiting for the antibiotic to start working? |
I hope the antibiotics help your puppy and he is feeling better quickly! Keep us updated! |
Here's an article on dental disease - scroll down to complications and the 2nd paragraph talks about how it can affect the heart, lungs and kidneys. I wonder if your vet thinks the dental is the cause of the problem. http://www.dog.com/information/dent.asp |
wheezing my dr. def thinks this all stems from his teeth. The last time I had them cleaned was over a year ago, so once he is better I will have it done again. He didn't mention anything I could do about the wheezing besides the antibiotics... I understand that his teeth could be the reason for the heart problems, however - i'm still not sure what caused the wheezing... sigh... |
