Loose Bowel movements 4 days??? Our 6 month old male yorkie Riley all of the sudden has had diarrhea very bad. For 3 nights he was up on the hour Thur, Fri & Sat. No throwing up but very bad diarrhea. We did a stool sample on Sat and it came back negative for whatever they were looking for. Under Vets orders we stopped all food for 12 hours starting Sat into Sunday and he had some bland food (rice) Sunday. He did sleep through the night OK Sunday Night. All day Monday he is starting to eat better but still very loose all day. Is this normal? We never feed him table food. He eats Iams Puppy Chiots. 1st time dog owner here. He is a great puppy. 1st of all...welcome! As for the stool, zoe has been getting diarrhea on and off for a few months. I'm sure its something they ate that we don't see. They have very sensitive stomachs. Since the stool test came out negative then I would switch him to the chicken and rice diet. boiled white chicken breast with rice and water so that its bland and goes down smoothly. After a few days of this his stool should go back to normal. Remember to slowly switch back to his regular food after his stool hardens. it also wouldn't hurt to give him a little bit of yogurt for good bacteria. Hope this helps. |
Dennis, welcome aboard! I am so sorry about your baby............Riley is on my prayer list. Good luck! |
I hope he's feeling better, if not I would call the vet. |
Welcome Dennis. These yorkies have very sensitive tummy's as I also found out. Boiled white meat chicken and white rice should do the trick in a couple of days then add his regular food slowly back. I do not know his size but my vet also said I could use 1/2 tblt of pepto bismol for the upset stomach and diahrea. Give before meals. I smached mine up and put it in his mouth. My yorkie is 13lbs I would use 1/4 if he is smaller. If it continues have him wormed by the vet. There was one time nothing showed up in the stools but vet suggested a possible male parasite. They do not show up in the stools because there are no eggs to lay. In less than 24hrs. he was his old self again. Good luck. Carol |
Did the vet give you meds for the diahrea? When chachi had it the vet gave me meds for him and it cleared up in a couple of days. I would give your dog pediallyte so it doesnt dehydrate |
Giardia is very hard to diagnose by a regular fecal exam. Did they just do one fecal float or did they charge you for the more expensive stain test? Are his stools light in color and greasy looking? If so, suspect giardia. I think it's been too long to just be a simple stomach upset when all he has been eating is his regular food. There have been some cases of contaminated food - did you recently open a new bag when the problem started. I would think he has some type of bacteria or parasite in his digestive tract. Talk to the vet about how long he can go on with diarrhea before he wants to put him on Panacur or Flagyl or some other antibiotic. In the meantime, give Pedialyte to restore the electrolytes lost with the diarrhea and feed the boiled chicken (easy to digest) and white cooked rice to firm up the stools. Here's a link to giardia. http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/gia.html |
