Don't know where I should post this but it is medical

Hi all,
With all the help you all have given me with Babybear's little problem with dry skin I wanted to let you all know I am so thankful and so is he.
I have a new problem. I have read the links that have been sent to me about Livershunts and Atlantoaxial. Now where Babybear was misdiagnosed by his vet more than once I see. What should I do besides change vets. Should I take action?
Now He has had problems with his neck since he was under a year old. Now I was sent the link for Atlantoaxial Instbility and he had all these symtoms all along. I wish I would have know. Even though it would have ended in surgery we wouldn't have gone through everything we went through with him if we would have just know. I would have had the problem taken care of as soon as he was diagnosed. And he wouldn't be going through heck now. And he would most likely be walking all on his own.
All my vet kept telling me when I would bring Babybear up to him was it was a pinched nerve. I figured it must have been. I didn't know any better. I wasn't the vet. I know he would come to us sometimes and want us to rub his neck because it hurt. We would rub it and he would go off and play as usual. Actually he would go pick on his brother and sister. His brother is a 90 pound Olde English Bulldogge and sister is a 75 pound pitbull. They were never rough with him. He was rough with them. lol
I am just courious what everyone's oppion is on this. Please let me know.
Thanks for all your help again.

I dont think there is much you can do but Im not sure....

To be honest with you alot of vets are undereducated when it comes to livershunt. I know these days alot of breeders are testing their pups at 12 weeks old before they go home for livershunt with a bile acid test. The AAI is something rare.

I myself have a rare disease called gastroparesis and it took several doctors and specialists before one of them actually figured it out simply because there is little known about it to most doctors

. Maybe someone here can give you better advice on what to do at this point as far as your vet. But in the mean time keep on working to make your baby better. I have an online friend whos dog has AAI. She belongs to the livershunt yahoo group I posted in another topic. I would join and ask about AAI and she should chime in. If you do join and post put the Disease in the subject line, I know the group gets a ton of email and she should be able to single that post out. It may be a LS group but there are so many dogs there with alot of different problems.

But what I would do before you diagnose your dog with this disease is find a proper vet and go about it that way and get a diagnoses. Im not a vet I am just offering advice on something I have read about in the past.

Although I love my vet - I still feel it's a dog owner's responsibility to do research and take an active role in their health. ATI might be rare, but Chrissy came up with a diagnosis very quickly, without a degree? so I think your vet was somewhat negligent. However, you are the one with the dog day in and day out so you are the one most likely to know all the symptoms and with research at least get some ideas to talk to the vet about. We don't have degrees in dog heath issues, but the internet provides such a vast amount of knowledge. I know I was the one that diagnosed my Lacy with Cushing's disease and then the vet performed the necessary tests to confirm the diagnosis. That's why YT is such a great forum, there are thousands (like 9 or 10) of members here willing to help you in your research. You sound like a great Yorkie mom!

Oh gosh I didnt diagnose, Im not a vet, I still beleive she should find a vet and help educate him. Maybe she needs to point out that this could be the problem, its rare (i beleive) and maybe most vets never seen it before. Im sure vets know about it but dont see it therefor dont diagnose it easily. It needs to be confirmed with xray I beleive.
I have just done alot of research on dogs. I think the reason I pin pointed what I believe may be wrong quickly is i have an online friend whos dog has it and what she had described in her post sounded ALOT like my friends dog

Chrissy helped me in finding the ATI. I had never heard of it before. But my vet actually there were two vets on that day that Babybear jumped and broke his neck. They both said because his blood levels were down and he had a seizure that he had Livershunts. That is why Baby's blood levels dropped so much since they took bloodwork in May. They both also told me that Babybear did not have a broken neck. They showed me the xrays twenty mintues after they took them and again they showed me them at two hours because my husband was with me at that time. They pointed right to the neck and said it was not broke, but they had no idea why he wasn't walking unless it was do to the seizure. I had seizures as a child and young adult I had a very hard time standing and getting controll of myself for hours if not a day later. So I believed him and the other vet. It was the ER vet that told me the reason Baby's blood levels were low was he was so close to death he was actually at deaths door. But my husband kept Baby alive with mouth to mouth. I had said earlier on another post that the vets said that Baby did not have a broken neck, but it was livershunts and he wasn't going to make it because the levels in his blood were so low. I should take him to the ER so they could take care of him just in case he passed that weekend. I kept him at home to pass with me. When I went for a second opinion thta is where I found out that Babybear did in deed have a broken neck and didn't have liveshunts like the other vets said he did. When all of this was going on I didn have time to do any thing even sleep. I jus sat there with him in my arms aor beside me if I left his side he would cry. I even took him to the bath room with me . I didn't have time to do research on the computer.
All I have to say it I thank Chrissy for helping me find this site for ATI. If it wasn't for her. I would not have know that there was a disease like this. I thought all along it was a pinched nerve in the neck for months like the doctors told me. I didn't know any differant. My mother was having simular symtoms with her pinched nerve in her neck. All except the broke neck of course.
