Help.. My lil boy has had diarrea the past three days. I took a stool sample to the vet today and they said if i dont hear from them by the end of the day then "no news is good news" Problem is, i dont know if i should wait it out or do something differently to get rid of the diarreah. I have been giving him chicken and rice, but with his food. I feed him royal canine puppy food. He has been on it since i brought him home and has never had a problem. Could this food all of a sudden be upsetting his stomach? He is acting normal. Which i guess is a good thing. any suggestions? |
I hope your little one is feeling better soon! I'd say don't give him his dog food for now...just stick with the chicken and rice. My vet has me use boiled hamburger and rice and also pepto bismol. Best wishes to you and your baby! |
Connie gave you some good advise and I hope the vet says it's nothing and just an upset tummy - but 3 days is something to worry about I agree - Make sure he drinks lots of water also - You can try Pedialite (for human babies) to keep him hydrated - but I would bug your vet if he's still doing this tommorrow... |
WHen Chewy had this problem I used the chicken and rice and no dog food. the chicken and rice are boiled and no spices ... just real plain, and I added the chicken broth I boiled the chicken in to it so he got extra liquids. |
I agree with the above - give boiled chicken (easy to digest) and rice (firms up the stools) only. I would also definitely put him on Pedialyte to restore the imbalance of electrolytes caused by the diarrhea. Three days is a long time for a Yorkie to have diarrhea. How old is he and how much does he weigh? Worms and coccidia will show up in a fecal exam, but giardia is much harder to diagnose. |
I am surprised your vet didn't give you Albon (or something like it)... It stops diarrhea right away. Hope things get better. :) |
he is 7 months old and 8 lbs. I am taking him to the vet today. The stool sample came back neg. Wish me luck. |
I was going to suggest Pepto and then also maybe some Gatorade or Pedialyte (sp). I hope he feels better soon. Michelle |
I hope your little one is doing better soon. |
Much luck to you both! |
Is there an update? How is your little one doing? |
Updtate Heres an update on my lil boy. I took him to the vet. And while the vet is still unsure of the cause of his diarreah for now he is on two medications. One deworming, one for the problem. Also he is on a canned prescription diet. And is being tested for heart worm. The vet says he highly doubts its heart worm but wants to be sure since the other vet i went to never started him on heart worm medication and he is now 7 months old. I feel like an idiot bc ive had dogs before and I know to get heart worm. But Baci had ring worm when i brought him home and was on other medication so i thought the reason they never gave me the heartworm meds yet were bc it interferred with the ringworm medication. The vet is also having me switch him to adult food over the corse of five days one he is off the presciption diet. thanks for everyones comments they are soo appreciated. |
Diarreah is not a symptom of heartworm (fainting, respiratory difficulties like asthma, coughing, loss of weight), but they do always want to test before giving heartworm meds to make sure they don't have it (not really sure of the reasoning). Your vet is probably just getting him on the heartworm and nothing more (probably as a worm preventative more than anything else right now). What meds did they put him on? Is he doing better or does he still have diarrhea? |
