puppy licks her paws and tail, what to do? My puppy licks her paws and tail all the times, now she doesnt have that much hair on her paws and tail. She seems like she is allergic to something. But i can't figure out what is she allergic to. We are feeding her brown rice with chicken, because she wouldn't eat dog food. We have tried a lot brand. So we have no choice but cook chicken meat with brown rice everyday. Will she be allergic to chicken? She has a lot fur on her body and head, but she has hailless tail and paws now.. :( |
Yikes!! Id get her to a vet ASAP if you havent already...I THINK they can do allergy tests on her to find out what she is allergic to and then you can go from there...poor lil baby!! Dawn |
Really..? I called the vet, they told me oh.. she is probably allergic to something. but never told me, i can have them test her. i guess i would have to call them again. |
paw lickin pup Look up demodectic mange on the computer. ALOT of pups have it. Usually minimal hair and maybe some slight redness. My shihpoo had some hair loss on his neck and the vet kept trying to convince me that was what it was. I looked it up and it looked nothing like his spot and was in a different area. I finally relented and let them do the scrape. It was negative, but I learned quite a bit about it from researching on the web. At least it would give you a better idea if you could rule that out. I think I remember it saying that a lot of pups will grow out of it. I think the treatment is repeated dipping over time, or some pretty potent pills if they don't grow out of it. Good luck. It's worth a shot!! |
by the way, my shih poo had a round of prednisone and his hair grew back. He still has discoloration in that area though. |
I agree with getting the pup tested for allergies. Best wishes to you both! |
I would have the skin test done. I would also now start your yorkie on Omega3 fatty acids because it helps to decrease the skin's sensitivity to allergens. Just put it on the food. It takes about 30 to 45 days to start working. They can also do a steroid shot to alleviate the itch, but this is not something you want to do on a longterm basis. |
