Esophagus - Stricture Hi There! I have a 5 mo yorkie, Deus, who two weeks ago had surgery to remove a piece of crab shell he had swallowed. The surgery removed 3 cm of his esophagus. He has survived the surgery and has improved through lots of tender care and feeding through a stomach tube. As per my vet's instruction, I am introducing food by mouth (watered down prescription a/d food). He did well for a few days, but is now vomiting and drooling. He is keeping some down and acting more like his old self (except for the vomiting and drooling). I return to the vet on Thursday for follow-up and he has described the options of another scope to look for stricture or the possibility that Deus will have to continue with the feeding tube indefinitely. Has anyone ever experienced this situation? |
I'm so sorry Deus has to go thru all that. I can't offer anything, but I will be praying for his visit Thursday to go well. I'll keep you both in my thoughts. |
wow.. I've never heard of anyone on here experiencing that - I hope someone on here reads this and can help you. Hope your baby improves soon! Welcome to YT! |
Thank you for your kind words and prayers. Deus is my first yorkie and I have had him for such a short time. He is such a joy. |
I dont know anything about this but I hope Deus will be okay. I will keep him in my prayers |
I don't know anything about this in dogs but I do in humans. A stricture or narrowing, forms from the scar tissue following surgery. In humans, the stricture can be dilated or stretched to stay open properly. It usually requires a few dilations to get the proper result so that one can eat properly following. If left untreated, the food can't go down the way it should |
Oh I am so sorry for you both! How sad, I hope he gets better. |
Update on Deus Deus had the endoscopy which showed he did not have stricture. He was put on medications to help heal the esophagus and to date he is doing better. We removed the feeding tube on Thursday. He is able to eat watered down a/d food and is having to be held upright for a few minutes after he eats. I was told that the esophagus takes a long time to heal but that there may have also been nerve damage from the surgery. If the nerves do not regenerate he will have to be held upright everytime he eats. Other than this, he is slowwwwly becoming his usual spunky self again. Each day we applaud even the smallest of progression. :D :aimeeyork |
Deus THE FIGHTER Deus had his first drool-free day yesterday. He is pretty much back to his fun & feisty self. His recovery is pretty remarkable. He is able to eat canned puppy nutro food at this time, but we welcome anthing that will take the place of a feeding tube and syringe. He apparently still has some stricture because he is unable to eat any food that has pieces of rice, etc. This website has been wonderful. All of the advice regarding food:aimeeyork and the support has been a lot of help. During his recovery we have found that foods containing corn or by-products aggravated his throat. I have always had dogs, but have never payed any attention to the ingredient labels. My eyes have been opened. |
Thank goodness little Dues is getting better. What an ordeal to have to go through for both you and he. I agree with you about the food. I never paid attention before I got Sissy. As a result of this forumn I know things I never would have imagined!! |
WONDERFUL... What a very nice thread to read this morning, it put a BIG :) on my face! |
