New to forum and need of help Hi everyone I am new to this forum and I need help! My Yorkie has skin problems. At first he started with white flakes, then one day he got a hot spot and we took him to the vet. There we got antibiotics for the hot spot, some omega 3 supplements and an Elizabethan collard to prevent any more scratching and bitting. His hot spot cleared up really fast, but after it was gone we removed the collard he was still scratching him self. His skin got worse. He was really oily, with more flakes and he expelled a bad odor. Then I got advise to give him showers with Nizorel shampoo. I have given him a shower every other day for a week and his skin looks way better, the flakes are gone, the smell is gone but he is still scratching and I'm afraid he could get another hot spot if I don't leave the Elizabethan collard on...his had it on for weeks now!!!!!! I know he hates it when I put it on! Any suggestions hot to stop the scratching? Please help!!!:aimeeyork Max:dogsm3: Gingy (chihuahua) |
This topic comes up fairly frequently here, and food, allergies and shampoos are the most common responses. Do you feed him a good quality food? Have you tried changing the food out? Have you asked your vet about the possibility of allergies. There's supposed to be a blood test you can do to check. Good luck. |
I second what Mike wrote - it is quite possibly allergy related either from food or shampoo you are using. My oldest yorkie has skin allergies and dumb me kept feeding her food with corn in it!!! She is on prescription food now that has absolutely no corn or wheat in it and the allergies have cleared up:) Check with your vet on possible testing, inquire about foods without corn or wheat in it, and you may need to find a hypo-allergenic shampoo. You'll pay more for the top quality food but it is so worth it because your precious baby will be so much happier:) Best of luck to you! |
