Gizmo is anemic, hypoglycemic and won't eat! I don't know what to do for my little guy. He is only 9 weeks old, and I just got him last week. My husband is in the navy, and we're stationed in Japan. I took him to the vet, but I don't speak much Japanese. Gizmo has diareah real bad. When I took him in they drew blood and took a stool sample. His blood sugar level was about half of what it needs to be, so they gave him a shot. He also had Coccidiosis (a parasite) and the vet gave me medicine to give him once a day for 8 days. His WBC count was fine, but he is low on red blood cells. I'm afraid if he doesn't eat anything he'll get worse. :( I tried baby food, canned puppy food, milk(which he usually loves), and I got nothing. All the poor little guy will do is sleep. Anything would be helpful. This is my first puppy. |
Welcome to yt sorry to hear gizmo is poorly there are a lot of people on yt who will be able to give advise it is a little quiet at the moment. Chicken and rice seems to be helpful for diarea try that and if gizmo won't drink try to syringe water into the side of his mouth .Good luck. |
There isn't a veterinarian on base there? You NEED to get some karo syrup right away since you will not be able to find nutrical and give him a little on the roof of his mouth to get and keep his blood sugar up. Keep the karo in his drinking water after you get him stabilized until he gets over the hypoglycemia. Where is your breeder? Maybe they can help you. You also need to get this puppy to eat try boiled chicken, canned food anything you can. Go back to the japanese vet if you need to, this is a very young puppy.Good Luck. |
Do not give him anymore milk tho. |
If you got the puppy from a breeder, contact them. They'll tell you what to do and I'm sure they've got karo syrup or nutrical on hand. Are there any pet stores nearby that you can get to? Try boiled chicken breast, little rice (for diarrhea), canned baby food (gerber chicken sticks or turkey) - you can get them at the grocery store or anyone with a toddler at the house that you can contact? Try water and the syrup or Nutrical if you get to it gently to the roof or side of the mouth, a few drops at a time. Good luck. |
If you cant find karo syrup you can also use honey |

As for eating, as he feels better he will get back to normal but in the meantime cook him some chicken or hamburger in water and try to get him to eat that. Also you need to keep his sugar level up, add some karo syrup or honey to his water and if need be syringe him some of it. If he at anytime acts like he's staggering, rush him back to the vet. If needed you can put karo or syrup directly in his mouth which will bring him around fast. Contact the breeder for help also. Good luck. |
Welcome and I am sorry for all the problems with your first puppy. It can be very scary when they are sick, more so I'm sure when thier is a language difference. My CAli had coccidia, kennel cough and went hypoglycemic 3 times when she was a puppy. Like everyone said you need to keep his sugar levels up and food and water regularly. I had to feed CAli every 4-5 hours at first, and she would only eat chicken, which she still eats a year later. So make sure he is eating and get the Karo, pancake or honey into him. If you can get to a petstore they should have some sort of high nutritional paste you can get or ask the vet if they have anything. AT 9 weeks he should be perky and eating and getting his sugar level up should make a big difference. Good luck and keep us posted. |
An Update on Gizmo He really liked the chicken! Thank you all for that great suggestion. The vet on base is on emergency leave, that's why I have to go out in town. He still has diareah, and he won't drink any water. I have been forcing him with a syringe about every hour or so. I just tried the karo syrup, so hopefully that will perk him up soon. If he's not better by this afternoon, I think I will take him back to the vet. Gizmo thanks you!!! and so do I!!!:animal-pa |
Oh so glad he's eating the chicken at least. Keep the syrup going and hopefully he will be better soon. My vet said that when they have coccidia it weakens their immune system. Luckily the medicine works pretty quickThanks for the update. Keep us posted. |
To get Gizmo to drink water, boil the chicken and give him the broth (cooled of course - no salt). You can save the water in the fridge. When I did this for Jewel, we put a 1/4 cup per container so we can monitor how much water she was getting each day. The smell of the chicken really helped Jewel take in her daily required amount of water. Jewel was 4 pounds and we were told by our vet that she neede minimum of 1/4 cup a day. She drank almost 1/2 cup of the chicken broth daily and the improvement was amazing! Hope Giz get's better soon! |
Also try Pedialyte....if he won't drink it voluntarily, put it in a syringe and give it to him. Hope he feels better soon! |
We are praying your baby feels better really soon. |
keep us posted! And I'm happy your pup's doing better now, keep feeding and giving water. Once he gains some energy you'll be amazed how active and energetic they get. It's so scary though when they get sick being so small. |

We put Baby Blessing food and liquid in ice cube trays and froze them, she loved it like that, so when she doesn't want to eat or drink that is what we did. It worked for us. |
