Help! Emma shaking after she eats?? Our new little Yorkie, Emma (9 weeks old, 1 lb. 7oz) had a pretty scary fall this Sunday. While she was on the couch with a friend of ours, she climbed to the very top and jumped off. We heard her hit her little head on our hardwood floors really hard, and she became extremely stiff and appeared to go into a seizure that lasted over a minute. Her mouth was open, she was shaking uncontrollably and she was making very scary sounds. We immediately took her to the ER Vet Service here in Chicago, and the Vet recommended she stay the night for observation. Her temp was a little low (99.2), but after being in an incubator for a few hours it went back up to a little over 100. To say the least, this was extremely scary! We told the Vet we had her on Puppy Stew (wet food) 3 times/day and Nutrical 3x/day. But they said it wouldn't be a problem having her eat their wet food.......now she has been home for 2 days, but has been shaking only after she is done eating her wet food? (And it is definitely not the type of shaking she had when she fell). This is almost like a cold tremble? You should also know that she absolutely LOVES her wet food!! Do you think this is a coincidence and that she is just overly excited? Or do you think this could be related to her seizure she suffered from the fall? Or something else?? Other than the trembling after she's done eating, she's completely fine! What do you think? Please Help! Thanks very much! |
I think, if I were you, I'd take her to the vet and have bloodwork done just to make sure everything is okay. What is in the puppy stew and who makes it? I've never heard of that. Does she display any other symptoms besides shaking after she eats? |
I would ask the vet. Welcome! I also live in the Chicago area. I hope she is better soon. |
If she never trembled after eating before, I think I would be worried. You're still giving her Nutrical? because trembling could be a sign of low blood sugar, but it wouldn't make since after eating. Are her pupils dilated when she is trembling? If so, you may want to shine a light in her eyes and see if the pupils respond correctly (get smaller). If they don't this could indicate some type of neurological problem. With the recent head injury and her being so young, I would take her in just to be safe. |
My vet told me to look for sign like this for a liver shunt that thier body's can't process the protein and they shake you might want to see if your vet can check for it and also this just doesn't sound normal i would call your vet and see about taking her back.I am so sorry you have to go through this i hope everything is ok my prayers and thoughts go out to you and your baby. Please Keep us posted. |

Thank You! Thanks for ALL your help and advice!! I just called our vet this morning and am waiting to hear back. This morning when we fed her she was fine. It was a new can of food so it had not been in the fridge yet. Wondering if the shivering has anything to do with how cold the food is...since she does not do this with her dry food?? Also, I am having trouble uploading pics. Any tips for this?? Thanks Again  |
Shaking going away....but still waiting to hear from vet The food is actually called "Spot's Stew" made by Halo. I just fed her lunch, and this time I put it in the microwave for about 10 seconds prior to giving it to her....no shivering whatsoever! Also when she was shaking yesterday, I brought her into the bathroom and warmed her up with a hairdryer (we did this the other day after we gave her a bath and she seems to love it!). She stopped shaking when the warm (but not too warm) hairdryer was blowing on her. Wondering if it has to do with the coldness of the food, or her excitement? A friend of ours compared this with when we eat ice cream too fast and get those brain freezes....but right now Emma is doing great! We are waiting to hear back from the vet. They did do some bloodwork on her Sunday and they said she was definitely not hypoglycemic. Can I assume they would have tested for everything else? However, the vet seemed sure of herself when she said there was probably no chance of internal bleeding....I want to ask her how she is so sure! And also why they didn't put her on any anti-inflammatory just in case?? Thanks for all your replies, we really appreciate it!! |
Actually yes, in puppies sometimes if you are feeding canned food and you are giving it straight out of the fridge it can cause a chill. An old neighbor of mine feeds canned food, I only do if they are in a not eating mood and still just mix it into their dry food for taste. Try putting a little hot water in it and mixing around to warm up food out of the fridge. I would still ask vet about other conditions people are talking about! |
