Parvo Outbreak in our city Hi everyone, I've read quite a few posts on here about Parvo. Scary stuff. I wasn't too worried about it here until I read the paper today and we have our own Parvo outbreak, it's been traced to a pet store and a lady selling dogs on the side of the road :( So my question for everyone - when there is an outbreak in your community do you try and keep your furbaby home at all times? I want to keep my furbaby as safe as possible, but I don't want to over react (which I tend to do when it's my baby's health). I also do not want to take away her enjoyment of her daily trips to the park and on outings with us. Any words of advice? Thanks! |
i haven't seen anything here but you can never be to careful just as long as they have their shots and kept away from strange dogs they should be ok. |
I've been nervous, too, ever since poor little Madda came down with Parvo. But, Cindy was telling us that she has no idea WHERE Madda got it because Madda never went outside and was never around strange dogs. So, I guess there is really no point in me worrying. All I can do is stay current on all of their shots and keep them away from strange dogs and stray poo in the yard. Whatever is meant to happen, will happen. Of course, I'm sure I'll be singing a different tune if something actually does "happen." :( |
That's a hard one because Parvo can live on the ground for a year so, if you were going to be very careful you would have to confine your pet indoors for some time. You can also bring it in on your shoes and clothes so you would have to "disinfect" yourself every time you go out. This doesn't really sound feasible to me. I would make sure my pets were up to date on all shots though. How old is your baby and what vaccine schedule did you use? If she's over a year and a half and has received the booster around 1 year and 4 months I would think you are safe. A puppy I would be a little more concerned about. Just know the symptoms of parvo so you can detect it immediately and seek help quickly. Here's a great link that tells about parvo and goes into vaccinations and immunity. http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=467 |

Ok... since this has happened to me recently I feel like I should share some stuff... first.. even though they have their shots it does not guarantee they will be immune to this disease ( look at my baby, case in point)... secondly... this virus can be carried on the bottom of your shoes, on your hands ,clothes, purses feet car tires,anywhere... all you can do is try to not go to too many over crowded places where animals hang or un clean areas....it is very hard.. I religiously mop my home 2x a day with clororax and have my outside shoes and inside shows.. I wipe and wash my hands periodically and when Gizmo goes out I watch him like a hawk... it's weird in a way because ever since his sister passed away he won't step foot on the grass at all...I think he senses something.. he just pees the side of the grass... it looks a bit funny... everyone just be careful with yours and for a small fee of 6-10 dollars it doesnt hurt to re vaccinate yours.... vet said after their 1 year it is less likely they will get it but never say never! |
Parvo I have a baby play yard from Toys R us out side, I have rocks in there and a little bit of leaves and thats where Chubaaca goes... No animails go in but him. This not only makes me feel better about him doing his buessness but also he is being potty trianed and knows what we want from him... I walk him on the raod where I can see what he is sticking his tiny nose into! I read up on parvo and am scared enough now... |
We had a similar situation here...someone selling pups in front of Lowes and one pup got sick with parvo. Even with updated shots, I'm not willing to expose my babies so they must stay home. Adult dogs have been known to get parvo. Because they've built up a stronger immunity, they are less likely to die from the sickness as pups are. FYI...parvo can stay in the soil for 7-10 years. You can treat infected areas with bleach. |
i would be very very careful not to take them to any parks, doggy daycares, dog runs and so on. parvo can stay dormit in soil for a LONG time, i think its up to 3 years but Im not sure |

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back here, I was having some techy problems with my computer. Thanks for all of the responses and information. I think I'll watch her more closely from now on, but I guess I can't isolate her forever. She is vaccinated and is almost 16 months old. There has been more information on the local news and it seems the outbreak is much worse in the rural areas where there is a history of lower vaccination rates so the SPCA is doing some education campaigns. |
