Chocolate chip pecan cookies... :confused: Last night me and my husband left for the movies and we put poopy in the kitchen and made sure he couldnt get out like we always do...but i guess he's finding a way cuz when we got home we noticed a mess in our living room and found out that he had got out and got into our bag of chocolate chip and pecan cookies (yummy)...he ate either 2 or 3 of them (crumbs everywhere) but i'm so afraid that he's gonna get really sick... no real symptoms yet...but i'm still scared...i'm staying up just in case but i'm not sure how much is too much. his vet opens at 8 am so i'm waiting til then...anyones YT ever ate chocolate? what happened? poopy is around 7 pounds. my husband says that's not enough to really hurt him, but i'm still afraid... i know i'm a worry wart mommy...he's my baby and i want to make sure he's ok... |
Oh no Hopefully the worst that will happen is a little diahrrea. He may be just fine but I would call my vet like you said. Good luck |
mine did too... i had some babysitters at the house and left a partial choc covered strawberry out i have no idea how much she ate but i could smell chocolate on her so i know she had some... so far all is ok but should i be concerned at all? how soon does a problem show itself when it comes to chocolate? |
It takes on average, a fairly large amount of theobromine 100-150 mg/kg to cause a toxic reaction. Although there are variables to consider like the individual sensitivity, animal size and chocolate concentration. On average, Milk chocolate contains 44 mg of theobromine per oz. Semisweet chocolate contains 150mg/oz. Baker's chocolate 390mg/oz. Using a dose of 100 mg/kg as the toxic dose it comes out roughly as: 1 ounce per 1 pound of body weight for Milk chocolate 1 ounce per 3 pounds of body weight for Semisweet chocolate 1 ounce per 9 pounds of body weight for Baker's chocolate. So, for example, 2 oz. of Baker's chocolate can cause great risk to an 15 lb. dog. Yet, 2 oz. of Milk chocolate usually will only cause digestive problems. Milk chocolate will often cause diarrhea 12-24 hours after ingestion. This should be treated symptomatically (fluids, etc..) to prevent dehydration |
Wow! Feminvstr sure knows her stuff! I was just going to say that there probably isn't alot of chocolate in those cookies (I'm guessing, just chips) and Ginger once ate a large chocolate coin, gold foil and all, and all we experienced was some diarrhea and some hyperactivity. (may or may not have been related, but she sure was hyper). She wasn't full grown at the time, probably only about 8-9 lbs. Anyway, good luck!!! And, as always, keep us posted on the outcome! thank you for the information...i think poopy should be ok...he seems alright. the chocolate cookies were more chunks than chips so that's why i'm worried. also i'm not sure about the pecans either. i'm sure he'll be ok...maybe a bit upset in the tummy. he was breathing hard last night though, but now seems ok...i think,,,i'll call the vet today. |
Oh - I have certainly had this problem before - but not with a Yorkie - with a large lab puppy. This guy ate a whole platter of chocolate chip cookies during the night while we slept. And, it's hard to believe, but except for the few that the family ate - he ate the rest of 6 dozen cookies. He totally pigged out (he had to have eaten at least 4 dozen, large, cookies) - and then proceeded to have diarrhea and threw up all over the house. This is what we woke to. By this time - he was over being sick, was feeling great, and was begging for another cookie. My point is that he was none the worse for it later the next day - but he did get sick initially from being such a pig. If I were you - I'd just watch my little Yorkie for a while. Even if he does throw up a couple times or get a little diarrhea - this is certainly to be expected ----- if he ate a lot of cookies, which it doesn't sound like he did. And, if he hasn't gotten sick yet, he probably won't, and everything will be just fine. Carol Jean |
wow all that cookie you lab ate... how cute though. poopy is doing great. vet checked him out and he had no symptoms since then. now he's just back to being poopy... |
