does anyone know anything about foxtail grass Almost two weeks ago, Nelly had a gagging, coughing and throwing up. I brought her to the vet and they removed what I thought was grass. Upon researching on the internet, I think it may have been foxtail. It says that it can be fatal in dogs. If anyone knows anything about these things please let me know, Nelly has eaten several more since then and has thrown them up but still seems like she may have a little wheezing on her chest. I do not know if this is irritation or if there is something else wrong, any info would be great. |
Val, I just looked up foxtail. OK for just about any animal but dogs. I think it is just the brown parts(after they ripen) that are bad. The seeds have something that causes the skin or any other part inside or outside of a dog to pus and the seeds burrow into the pus canals. The sites say it is very dangerous for dogs but usually not fatal. The fatalities come when the seeds get into the lungs. Try this site: www.healthyfoodforpets.com/Foxtail-Grass Good luck and I sure hope Nelly is OK. |
Wow, I didn't know that. I thought I knew everything. But must have been missing that one bit of information. NOW I know everything. :p :p |
Thanks for the info, I went on the site and the stuff Nelly had removed from her throat was yellow but the vet said that she did not think it was foxtail and that when they sedated her they went right down her throat and everythink looked good down there. She is doing well and back to herself but still has a little wheezing in the throat but the vet said it may take awhile for the irritation in her throat to heal. You learn something new everyday, I cannot believe I even have to watch the grass that my dogs chew on now, unbelievable!!! |
I'm so glad it wasn't foxtail that Nelly ate and she is going to be OK. I didn't know how scarey that stuff was till I looked it up. That's some "BAD A" grass! |
my dads dog got a bit of grass stuck in his windpipe and it got infected so i never let any of my dogs eat any kind of grass.:) |
