kidney problems My 7 month old Yorkie Wylie was fine Saturday night, but Sunday morning she was lathargic and in pain. Took her to the emergency vet and they said her kidneys were full of kidney stones and she was trying to pass one. They said they had never seen a young dog in this condition, nor had they seen a dog with both kidneys so affected. They told me that her outlook was not good. They told me IF she was able to pass the stone that was trying to go through her uretha....then she would have to be in the hosptial for long term analysis and monitoring. They said if she was ever able to go home, she would need constant monitoring and care. Their best case was that she could have some good days. Sunday night after an agonizing day of holding her and praying, we just couldn't continue to let her be in pain....even with the pain meds, she was not in total relief...we had to let her go. My 3 boys are devestated and I have not been doing too well myself. Has anyone ever heard of a dog with this condition? The vet said that it appeared to be genetic and that her body was not metabolizing things correctly. She was constantly thirsty and peed ALL THE TIME...I really thought she had a bladder infection. Anyway...any info would help me...even though she is gone...we are in agony and want to find out more about her condition. Thanks, Wylie's mom |
I am so sorry for your loss. I know nothing about this, but wanted to pass along my condolences to you and your family. If the vet feels this is a genetic condition, have you contacted your breeder to let them know? If you had a contract, you should get a refund. |
I am so sorry for your loss. I know you must be devestated. You could try to look up information on the issue at www.petplace.com they have a lot of health information for animals there. |
Please accept my condolence on the loss of your furbaby. My heart just breaks for you and the boys. Here is another site that might help. www.marvistavet.com/ |

:littleang Please accept my condolences to you and your family. |
thanks for the kind words....there is such a huge hole in my heart and such an empty place in our house. I just cannot understand how she was so OK on Saturday and in such a terrible place on Sunday...will continue to try and figure it out... |
I am so sorry. Did they test for liver shunt because that can cause kidney stones/ crystals? |
I am so sorry for your loss, reading your post brought tears to my eyes. Your family will be in my prayers.. Gina |
I am so sorry for your loss. Liver shunts can definitely cause kidney stones and crystals. Peeing and drinking all the time is a symptom to look for in detecting livershunts due to the effects on the kidneys. I hope that time will heal your heart and memories will soon bring smiles instead of tears. Welcome to YT... |
Her blood work showed no liver problems. I talked to my vet today and he said he had never heard of a young dog with problems like that and that it had to be a genetic metabolic disorder....I have not talked to the breeder yet, but I will....if only to make sure they are aware. I am not sure I am ready to get another one at this point...but someday..... |
I am so sorry for your loss. |
OMGosh - I'm so so sorry to hear this. My heart goes out to you .....I've never heard of that either but thank you for sharing. :( Poor little girl...that's so young. |
Why wasn't surgery to remove the stones an option? The stones could have been sent to Minn to be analized and could have possibly been given a diagnose for them? I am sorry to hear that such a young pup had this problem, but there had to be a reason for them. Have you contacted the breeder to see if she knows anything? If you got the pup from a good breeder she/he will be interested in any problems that occur with their puppies, and may even offer to give you another pup from another litter when they have one. |
I am so very sorry for your loss. I commend your strength in continuing to learn more about your pups condition and possible causes. The advise to inform the breeder is a good point. My heart goes out to you. J |
I am so very sorry for your loss!! I have never heard of this happening! Please know that you and your family are in my prayers!!! |
Our prayers to you and your family. |
Hello. I'm sorry to hear about your puppy. My family and I just went through the same thing with our 10 month old Joey. I have a 5 year old Yorkie who has been fine but I bought our last little guy through a different breader. Our little guy was fine and had us laughing Friday night and by Monday he was very very sick. We too had to put him to sleep and it's the hardest thing to do...I had never met a dog with his personaity and our vet said it was rare thing to happen to such a young pup. I too wish we would have had some prior symptons but he too was very sudden and we had to bring him in to emergency as it happened so quick.. |
Zeus was the same I just had put my darling Zeus down on Feb 15th. He too was great then he took a turn for the worst. In 2 days he was gone, I know what you are feeling. He had pain, peeing all the time and drinking water. He was not doing any of the things like before. I knew he was in serious pain and he could not go on like this so I did the hardest thing I ever had to do I did it for him I miss him and cry for him. Even this makes me cry, but I did the right thing. I told him I loved him kissed him good-bye. But he had kidney disease I never knew, If the vet seen it 3 mos. before it still would be the same out come. It just happen to fast. he was going to be 7 yrs old in May. He loved me and Iloved him very much I'm so glad I was his MOM. If you need to know anything please write back. I'm in Pa. You too are a great MOM to your little one. I know your pain you are feeling My heart goes out for you. Love Susiezeus I have Zeus son and daughter and wife. Midas 3, Venus 3, and Clhoe almost 7 |
