Have you heard of this???
 

I'm actually posting about Baby, my moms Yorkie. She hasn't been feeling well. At first Baby started out having foul smells down by her bottom. Mom knew that it was her anal glands and they needed to be expressed. So she took her to the groomer and sure enought it was full. (That was last week) So this week mom noticed the smell was back. So mom just kept a close eye on her. She then started to notice when Baby would have a bowel movement there would be blood in it. She called the vet and made an appointment to take her in. He looked at her and cleaned her out again and then checked her up higher and found a small cyst on her anal gland. He said that they could watch it to make sure it didn't get any bigger or go ahead and remove her anal sacs so she would never have this problem and the cyst would be gone. Is this very common? We just don't want Baby to have any pain either way and want whats best for her. Any surgery is scary and we aren't quite sure of how she would react afterwards. We heard she would have problems controlling her bowel movements. Baby feels aweful when she has accidents. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

thanks so much for posting this for me Sis, Baby is sleeping now that the storm is over;) sure hope someone comes along and lets us know if they have had this happen or know of someone that has.....im worried what is it gonna be like afterwords....will she be able to control her bowels??

I don't want to scare you, but my mother n laws Bichon had that on her bottom. The vet advised surgery, but she did not get a chance to do it. They had to put it off twice. It burst a couple of nights before christmas. It burst inside not on the outside and when the dog was feeling lethargic and wouldn't even go outside they thought she was just feeling under the weather. She threw up a couple of times, but they did not think it was that serious!! Her dog did not make it through the night. That was my mother in laws experience and to be honest Belle had this going on for years. It would go down, then come back,and she had to have surgery 3 times in her life for stones.

I am not telling you to do the surgery that is only a decision you can make. I only wanted to share Belles story. Belle was 11 years old and overweight. We all still miss her very much! Good luck to you!! I will keep you all in my prayers.

thanks so much for posting, sorry to hear this happen to your mil furbaby:( Baby is just like my child, when Kristi got married and moved out Baby is the only girl left and God knows i cant go on without her, she has already been through so much in her life i just dont what to put her through anything she cant handle, thanks again for your post and most of for your prayers they really mean alot:animal36

TillysMom -- I think you should be asking your vet all the questions you are asking here...... and, do whatever is appropriate and best for your little dog.

One of my Peke's had a problem with the anal glands stopping up a lot. One time they got impacted and they had to wash it out several times, and then it got infected and he was on meds for several weeks. If they had suggested surgery back then (many years ago) I probably would have done it.

Oh you are very welcome!!!!!!!!!! I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. I also have a little yorkie named Baby. I know how much she means to me so I can understand your feelings. She fills a huge void for you.I bought Baby because I was smothering my 3 teenage children. I have been able to let them live by having her. She is my baby now. I hope that you can come to a decision and I pray that all works out. I will continue to keep you and Baby in my thoughts and prayers. Hugs to you and Baby.

Its always scary when you talk surgery with a yorkie, but my sisters dog(chi) has to go the vet every other week, with having her glands clean, and the vet has tried his best to get her to do surgery because of it busting...I would seriously consider it..but it is your baby & I know how you feel, I am scared of Lexie getting spayed...Good Luck with Baby and we will be saying prayers for her and you too...:)

Does baby act like she is in pain now? If not, I would be inclined to wait and watch the cyst and see how it responds. I just wouldn't want to put her thru surgery if it was not required. How old is Belle?

I know your anxiety about putting your babies out for surgery. I did not want to get Cecilia spayed until she was older so that she would have more weight on her and she went into heat. Unfortunately though she stayed in heat for over 60 days and after several vet visits we decided that spaying her right away was the only was to stop her cycle. I was so scared to have her put under. I had read all of the terrible stories about Vets using too much anesthesia with the tiny dogs. But ultimately I had no choice and she was spayed. I absolutely refused to leave her at the vet hospital overnight and since I don't have kids or other animals, my vet said that it was okay to take her home. Anyway when she was spayed they discovered that her ovaries were covered in cysts so it was good that she had to take them out.

Just make sure you ask your vet about the spacifics of the surgery and the anesthesia that will be used. Ask lots of questions so that you can make your decisions with as much info as possible. Baby, Cecilia and I hope you get better soon.

Belle was an 11 year old Bichon that had the problem for a good 3 years. They would get them drained and she'd be fine a while then one day she was with a different groomer and they squeezed them til they bled. It was on the chart for them not to be touched, but she didn't check the chart. Things went from tolerable to worse after that. She needed surgery, but things came up.

I have heard of this. A friend 's dog had to have their anal glands removed. The surgery went great & no problems with loose stool or being able not to hold it. You wouldn't even know she had it done.

I've never known anyone whose baby has had the surgery but I do know that the risk, besides anesthesia, is the lose of muscle in that area. This could lead to not being able to hold her bowel movements.

If it were I, I would fully discuss the pros and cons with your Vet. Ask how often he does the surgery - that is always what I want to know. If he's only done 1 or 2, then I'd look for a more experienced surgeon.

I'm sorry to hear about Baby! My Pom has a rectal hernia and my vet referred me to a board certified surgeon for a consult. She felt Maya's hernia was not in immediate need of surgery, told me what to watch for and said that the surgery was not a bad and she would be fine afterwards. She did say that she would have to stay a couple of days and be on stool softeners for awhile. It's not the exact same surgery but same area. I would get a second opinion of a surgeon and then decide.
