Knee Problem Yesterday the vet told me that Daizy's left knee didn't look too good. He said that since she is only 1, she might be able to go for a while longer without it hurting her, but after sometime, it will start to bother her. I don't know exactly what he said was the problem, and he didn't give me a certain name, but basically he explained that the knee was popping out and making a weird noise. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is is common among yorkies, and how much does it run to get it fixed? Is it necessary to fix? Thanks :-) |
Sounds like luxating patella- it is pretty common in small breeds. That is where the knee cap slips out of socket. There are different grades, 1-4, four being the worse. Many dogs live all their lives with a grade one and never need any special treatment. Typically a grade 3 or 4 is a definite candidate for surgery. There are several members who's yorkies have been through the surgery, I am sure they can give you more information. You may want to seek a second opinion from another vet before you try to make a decision. Just to be sure and don't be afraid to ask any questions you might have. Knee surgery will put your little one up for several weeks. The surgery can be quite costly, too. By the way- Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! |

We just took Lil Girl today to the vet for the same thing. She is two this month. He doesn't seem to think it's anything to be really concerned with, he put her on rimadyl for a week and said she shouldn't be bothered again with it for about another year. She's 11 lbs, yes, she is a large Yorkie:aimeeyork ! LOL |
My eight year old yorkie/maltese has luxating patella and the vet has tried for years to get me to have the surgery, only reason I haven't it doesn't to seem to bother peanut at all. The vet is the one that was checking him when he was a puppy and told me that he had it, but after all these years no problems... If it were me I would wait and see how your yorkie does with it for awhile...:) |
Does anyone else have their baby on rimadyl? She seems to be doing better today. I just hate drugging her! |
Knee Problems Hello All! I am new here and I was reading all the threads that have been put out here about the knee problems. We have a Yorkie his name is Bailey and he is 7 months old, I started noticing that Bailey would carry his back left leg a little over a month ago. I took him into our Vet and he x-rayed him and we now have an appointment with a surgeon in Greensboro, NC @ Carolina Veterinary Association. I was devastated, the more he told me about his knee problem the more I cried. Bailey is basically our "baby". So I will keep you all up to speed on how the outcome is, ut he is on some anti-inflammatory medicine called Previcox. I really cannot tell that it is doing anything for him, but maybe internally it is. My vet thinks that Bailey will need knee replacement surgery, but Bailey plays and runs and acts like there is nothing wrong until he slows down and then he favors that leg some. We will see how things go, please keep us in your thoughts and prayers, because I am scared to death about this. My Vet also stated that this is not an injury that Bailey has received, he states that it is hereditary. |
I too would wait until you saw that your baby was in pain. I had a Schnauzer that was just put to sleep last year at 13. She had lp and looked like she skipped when she ran. Never a day did she yelp because of it or act like in pain. We never got the surgery (actually our vet never even brought it up!) and she did very well all through her life. She was a very sweet dog. |
