Sick Yorkie> Liver Disease My Yorkie has a liver disease, He rarely eats and if he eats too much he vomits. Does anyone know anything of this disease? Is their any kind of food that he might eat? He is eating Advantage, He is almost 10 months old and only weighs 3 pounds, and feels very boney. Does anyone know how long they live with a liver disease? He does have lots of energy throughout the day and can be playful but their are times where he is just so tired that he can't even stand. Please let me know your experience Melissa |
I hate to hear that your baby is sick :( I personally don't know anything about yorkie liver disease, but I do know that small breeds such as yorkies are suceptible to liver shunts. Try doing a search on YT for "liver" and/or do a google search for "yorkshire terriers AND liver disease." I am sure you'll find a lot of info that way. I would also suggest possibly finding a specialist that you can take your baby to see. I am sure that with the proper care that your yorkie can live a full and happy life. Please keep us updated on his condition. And by the way, WELCOME to YorkieTalk! There are so many caring and knowledgable people here. Hopefully someone will be able to help you. ;) :aimeeyork :) :animal36  :animal-pa :p |
awwww poor baby.. i am so sorry about his condition....how did u find out he had it? Was it something the breeder explained to you or something that came up later? |
I am so very sorry to hear that your pup is having health conditions. Sending hugs and get well quick wishes. I do have a couple of questions, though. Has your puppy actually had blood work done to establish liver issues? and if so what did your vet say? Liver problems are VERY serious, you need to have a vet you trust and then follow his/her recommendations. |
A friend of mine has a 7yr old Yorkie with liver desease. He is on a special diet from the vet. Has he had blood work done? Is this what dedected it. Why did vet not put him on a special diet? Poor pup, good luck to both of you. |
Liver disease :( I am so very sorry to hear about your babies health problem.Have you discussed this with your Vet and are satisfied that the liver is the problem? I know they do transplants on humans so why couldn't they do it on a Yorkie?Do you have a college that has a Veterinarian program nearby ?My prayers go out to you both. Please stay in touch with us and let us know what you can find out.:heart to |
MY yorkie did have blood work taken, and they did say that it most likely is a liver disease. And I'm pretty convinced that that is what it is. I gave him some chicken yesterday, not even that much and he vomitted 3 times yesterday. I bought my yorkie from Montreal, Canada and I'm in Parrysound, Canada he was shipped to me I did not know any of this till I got him home and he was coughing and sneezing and did not play and he was only 8 weeks old. I call the person I bought him from and she would not do anything about it. He has been to the vet about 5 times. He is the most adorable puppy. And all I want is for him to gain some weight, I feel so bad for him. He is so Skinny. |
omg that is aweful. i cannot believe the breeder would not do anything. i hope you get the help you need. there is no sence for that little baby to suffer like he is. give him lots of hugs and kisses |

live damage and can cause a dog to vomit. Also, has he been wormed? Symptons of parasites are also vomiting and weight loss. They do not always show up in stolls! Again good luck. |
He needs to be on a special low protein, low fat diet. Science Diet makes a formula, especially for this. I also think there is a prescription you can get from the vet that helps reduce the ammonia in the blood. The chicken is to high in protein and that is why he vomited. Most likely blood is bypassing his liver through an extra vein (called a shunt). When this happens the blood is not properly cleansed and it becomes toxic, mostly due to the build up of ammonia. Surgery is very expensive, like 3 or 4 thousand. I am sorry you are having to deal with this. Unfortunately, many Yorkies have this genetic problem. |
I am so sorry! Cali has a mild liver disease that was first suspected because of elevated Bile acids on her blood test and confirmed with a liver biopsy. Fortunately it is mild and I just keep her on a low protein food. But she had many trips to the vet and ER vet in her first 9 months. She was a very poor eater and I started feeding her a very lean chicken with 17% protein and Missing Link supplement which has something in it for their digestive system and she has improved tremendously. She has put on weight and loves to eat now. You definately need to have vet get a definate diagnosis so you can get him on the right diet and meds if necessary. Also, sometimes surgery can correct the problem. Good luck and keep us posted. |
Thank you All for taking the time to write I want to thank everyone for writing, everyone has helped. My little guy 'yorkie" that's his name, seems to be doing better today but he has his good moments and bad moments. I am going to look in to the sicence diet food, as well as not so much protein for him. I am also going to bring him to the vet again for a proper diagnosis. Thanks again |
Here is a website that might help you that is linked through YTNR (Yorkshire Terrier National Rescue. http://www.livershunt.com/ |

Update on Yorkie I wanted to let everyone know who took the time to read my story know that yorkie was put to sleep on Saturday. He was very weak and I didn't want him to suffer anymore and the vet said that If I don't put him to sleep I would be very selfish so know matter how much I did not want to, I did. I miss him very much every minute of the day. Please pray for him. He will be remember for the love he gave to everyone who met him and for the smiles he put on my face every day. |
