Could this be kennel cough? The day we brought Elle home I noticed ( later in the day) that she had a lil cough. I made an apt with my vet to have her looked over for the puppy agreement, with the breeder, as well check out her cough. It seemed to have gotten a lil worse over night. She had a temp of 101 at the vets office. He gave her a shot of something and then put her on antibiotics. He told me that she just has a lil cold from not being used to the air conditioning. ( going from 98 degrees outside and 70 degrees inside was what triggered it, or so he thought) It's been 2 weeks now,and I have seen some improvement. But she still has that slight cough every now and then. She eats just fine, plays great, and sleeps soundly. I notice it more in the morning when I first get her out of her crate. Does anyone think this could be kennel cough? The more I read on here the more I think it could be. Or does anyone have any other ideas? |

she might have kennel cough if she's still coughing. take her back to the vet and have her looked at. she might need more AB's |
Sounds like Kennel Cough to me! Sometimes it takes a couple of weeks or even months for the antibiotics to get rid of the kennel cough. If you are done with the ABs and she is still coughing, take her back to the vet. Otherwise, just keep giving her the ABs until your next vet visit. |
She is still on the antibiotics, I think she has enough in that bottle for one more week. I'll call the vet tomm. and see what he says. I'll ask them if she can be seen on Saturday. |
100.5 to 102.5 is normal, not a fever in a dog. There are several strains of kennel cough, both viral and bacterial. Generally, antibiotics do not cure kennel cough - they only keep it from developing into pneumonia. It's like when you go to the doctor for a cold and he usually won't give you antibiotics, but some will saying it's to keep you from getting bronchitis. If it is kennel cough his body must overcome it on it's own. Talk to the vet about boosting his immune system with Vitamin C and Echinacea. |
Cali had it for 3 months and had 3 rounds of antibiotics. It finally went away, but she never acted sick just the little cough. I think its a good idea to check back with the vet. |

Thanks guys. You're the best!:D |
I just got my Yorkshire Terrier Magazine in yesterday and in there is an article about a flu with Kennel Cough symptoms. It could be that too. I will have to check the article again and let you know what it says. All I remember is that it acts like Kennel Cough in symptoms but is actually a flu. I hope your baby is feeling better soon. I would get her checked out again just to be sure. |

Inforamtion on the Canine Flu - similar to kennel cough It called canine flu. It was originally mistaken for a potent strain of kennel cough. It is now identified as an influenza virus. Outbreak started in Florida Greyhound track in 2004, 8 -22 infected dogs died. It spreads quickly where dogs are housed together and can be passed down between dogs making casual contact on the streets. Even humans can transfer it from one dog to another. Since the virus is so new, dogs have no natural immunity against it. Like kennel cough, infected dogs will cough and gag for up to three weeks, but they also become seriously ill. Many dogs run a high fever and some go to develop viral pneumonia. Somewhere between 1 to 10 percent of the dogs stricken with this die. This canine flus is technically called Influenza A, subtype H3N8. They have also had cases in Texas as well. The flu has been confirmed now in 13 states and the District of Columbia. BAsed on DNA testing the virus mutated from the influenza virus that infects horses. The H3N8 virus is not related to the human virus or the H5N1 avian flu that has claimed over more than 60 humans lives in Asia. One day a vaccine may be an essential component of hte canine vaccination programs - at this moment there is not a vaccine for this virus. This inforamtion was sumamrized form page 46 of the Yorkshire Terrier Magazine April/ May issue. |
Thanks for the info..... I talked to my vet yesterday, they do want to see her back, and run some more tests. And of course give her some more antibiotics. So I am going in Tommorrow. She hasnt been doing it as bad the last couple of days, but she still does it when she firsts wakes up and when she starts running around too much. I'll let yuou all know what the vet says tomm. Thanks again everyone..... |
Just got back from the vet. I told him that I thought she had kennel cough and he told me that he was sorry if he mislead me but that was what he was treating her for. I was like OHHHHH! All he told me at our last visit was it just a lil cold from going in and out of air conditioning. So anyways, he gave her another shot and stronger antiobiotics. So hopefully this will clear up soon. I def. don't want it going into pneumonia. So I'll just keep my eye on her and keep my fingers crossed that this round will clear it up. |
Well, I guess that is GREAT news then! I hate that she is sick, but I am happy that she is being treated properly. Hope she gets well soon! :D |
