I don't know?? Oscar started having diarrhea around noon yesterday - the first bm was quite runny but he only went once - didn't keep trying to go. The bm's following that were not quite as runny, more formed, but he still was obviously not feeling well. He had a hard time getting settled and was very restless... When he finally did get to sleep, he slept pretty well all day. This morning I've brought him to work with me and he's been running around like crazy like he usually does but he has had a tiny bm since we've been here and I noticed a small amount of blood in it - this is the first time I've seen blood in his poop and I don't know if this means it's something serious or if it's just because he's irritated down there from going more frequently. He didn't eat much yesterday afternoon but when he woke up from his long nap he ate his whole dinner and he's eaten this morning. I should also mention that he threw up once in the afternoon before he had his nap. He's still eating and drinking, should I be worried that something is going on? I'd really like to avoid a vet visit if possible... I see the vet more than I see my parents!:thumbdown He's gotten diarrhea in the past, and it has cleared up on its own within a day or two (I don't like to change his food or administer drugs if it's not really necessary). I guess my main concern is for the blood in his stool... Also.. this seems like a spontaneous occurance to me - he hasn't gotten into anything he shouldn't and he hasn't smelled any other dog's poop etc. while out on walks. Just came out of nowhere... Any thoughts or suggestions on this?? |
IMHO - whenever you see blood you should take a sample to your vet. It could be coccidia and Albon will fix your little one right up. |
A small amount of blood could just be from irritation. If he is eating, drinking and acting normal, I think I would feel safe to wait 48 hours. If his stools continue to be runny or any blood after that I would take in a stool sample. |
Please take him to the vet, I'm worried about the blood . Better be safe . Let me know how it goes . |
That's what I was thinking... If he's not better by tomorrow I"ll take him to the vet. He seems to get a bout of diarrhea every once in awhile and recover from it on his own, so hopefull he will this time too. He's playing and everything just like normal, just pooey... I only noticed a tiny amount of blood in one of his bm's and that was this morning, he's gone once since then and there was no blood... |
It could possibly be a parasite. I love my vet but the vet checked his stools and said nothing was there. It must be his food. I boiled chicken and gave him white rice for a couple of days until they firmed up then tried adding some food. It would start all over again. I had food for sensitive stomachs, Royal Canin Yorkies & Paul Newman's brand. After almost 2mos of this I went for a second opinion. He wormed him, problem gone in 48 hrs. That was six months ago. The new vet said he had a male parasite that does not lay eggs so they do not show up in the stools. They hang around in the intestines and cause problems. Eggs can lay on the ground for ever, even through the winter and can be sniffed up through the nostrils when the dog is sniffing around outside. Just a thought. Hope he is better soon. |
Janice, How is Oscar doing? |
Oscar's doing GREAT! I was REALLY worried about him - I put off going to the vet because he's had diarrhea before and it kept seeming like he was getting better (still running around, playing). BUT, on thursday, he wouldn't eat anything, I gave him nutrical and he threw that up (3 times in about 15 minutes!) and he was REALLY not feeling well (you know, you can just tell). So I got him into the vet that afternoon and they prescribed a med and some special food for him to eat for a couple days. I still don't know what exactly caused it - vet didn't seem too concerned though because he was still really well hydrated (thank God). She mentioned something to do with the bacterias in his intestines and that they had probably gotten a little out of balance. That night, he was soo much better and the next day was like night and day difference. He's much better now! Thank you for asking! |
I'm glad your puppy is better. I was going to tell you to wait a day or so - most of the time this problem goes away on its own. Puppies and children do get diarrhea once in a while - And - a little blood (rarely) isn't a real problem either unless it continues. If it does - it's always time to visit your vet. Glad your puppy is better...... Carol Jean |
I am glad that your puppy is feeling better. The little ones give us a scare occasionally. |
Glad to hear Oscar is doing better. These little guys can really give us a scare. |
