Rex broke his nail! Help! Help! Rex tore his nail part of the way off - it's just hanging there, and he's licking it and licking it, and won't really let me see it. I don't know what to do - can someone please help me? Thanks in advance! |
Is it bleeding? If it is it needs to be stopped with septic powder. If it's not bleeding, I would say leave him alone. But I'm no expert! LOL :p |
It's actually bent the wrong way and ripped. But it's not bleeding. I guess we are going to wait to take him to the vet tomorrow morning. Thanks anyway! |
do you think it is ok to clip it? or is it like the whole nail? |

you said he won't let you look at it. can you have your husband stand up and hold him against him with legs forward so you can look at it better or clip it? |
I'm afraid it's too far down to cut the nail off. It's actually bent to the side (much like when a human bends their nail back), and torn a bit. He keeps licking it, and it looks like it's just hanging by a little bit, but I don't want to take the chance that we cut it, and it starts bleeding like crazy. We can't afford *another* emergency vet fee - Rex has had some health issues, and his vet totals this year are almost $3000 so far! We finally got him to stand still long enough to take a good look at it, and it is bent and torn in the dark part of the nail, so like I said, we just don't want to take the chance that it will start bleeding tonight. I can go in late to work tomorrow, and just run him by the vet first thing in the morning. Thanks for all the responses! |

You have probably already went to the vet by now, but for future searches here is a good link to first aid for a broken nail. http://www.petplace.com/dogs/what-to...ail/page1.aspx |
