Very Painful Bowel Movements - HELP! My dog has been having really painful Bowel Movements today; he is almost always silent, but today he's been letting out one ear-piercing yelp after another. At first I thought he was constipated. Then a vet told us to check his rear for fecal-matted fur, which might be blocking his movements. Sure enough, that was the case; I took care of the matting, and he let out some feces - but it was odd looking: less solid than usual, more green, and sort of curdled looking. 15 minutes or so later, however, he tried to pass some again, but once again the horrible yelps of pain, and nothing came out. I checked his rear, and his anus seemed swollen; I wiped it and encountered some blood. The area seems so sensitive that he even yelped later when he was just trying to pee. Now, he seems very lethargic. Please help! Does anyone know what is going on or what I should do? |
Lola has had the same problem. The vet gave her a dog/cat laxative and now she takes it a few times a week. It is great and we have had no problem since. |

oh poor baby - I found when that happened with mine when they were little -a warm bath really helps - if you have a little nozzle maybe squirt some warm water on it gently too - I'd def try to get in to see your vet if this goes on longer - he can give you something to soften it up some - That's really hard to hear :( Poor little guy - try vasaline in the meantime to take away some of the burning - he is probably really sore. I hope he feels better soon !! |
Feeding him a little bit of olive oil or canned pumpkin will soften the stools. I would wash his sore bum in warm water |

Another question: what should I do with him in the immediate future? I did wash the area, and applied a little vasoline, but I'm afraid to even take him outside for him to go potty, for fear that he will experience the awful pain again. |
Try the warm bath and if you can speak to the vet - I would def call them - I know lots of people swear by the canned pumpkin like Chachi said - you may want to try that too - just a little bit. |
Perhaps the anal glands have abcessed. This happened to my Yorkie. If this is the case, you really need to get to the vet. |
If he continues to cry - I'd call the vet back. I am really not one to run to the vet or call the vet all the time. But - pain is something that warrants a call or a visit. Keep the hair very short around his little rear end. You don't want this to happen again. Carol Jean |
