Burned Foot PADS!! HELP!! PLEASE I am having a BBQ today for father's day and my little louie was outside with us running around...all of a sudden he started crying loudly..because he was running on the hot bricks near the pool area he burned his foot pads...I didn't realize this could happen to these little guys, it's never happened before. HELP, I am a hysterical mess with him crying. What can I do to relieve his pain should I take him to the vet? I am so mad at myself, I didn't know this could happen with him he's always outside with us and he's always been fine. Please help... |
are they raw and bleeding?? if so i would take him to the vet if not i would call the vet, most will help over the phone, maybe try some burn cream and wrap them in gauze to keep him from licking them good luck, keep me posted |
One was bleeding and a little piece of his foot pad is dangling. I feel like such an a******, I can't believe I let this happen to him. He is calm now. I put desitin on them and he is sleeping in his bed. Poor baby |
is it bad? i mean is it just like the first layer thats hanging off did you call the vet yet? you are not bad, i wouldnt have thought about it earlier, we all have accidents dont beat yourself up, please! did you wrap his feet after you put destin on? i wouldnt want him to lick it |
I would say get him to the vet...ASAP |
how big of a piece of his pad is hanging off? is it just a flake or is it deep? if its deep it might need to be sutured and he might need a booty put on for a few days. If its not too bad put some neosporin on it and then put a sock over his foot and tape the sock around his ankle so it won't fall off |
ohhhhh poor baby! I never would have thought of that happening, it's not your fault. I hope he feels better soon and they recover quickly. |
You've gotten some really good advice! Keep us updated, I hope he feels better soon! |
Thanks for replying so quickly guys. He seems to be doing fine..I'm still taking him to the vet tomorrow. I feel so terrible, I have cried my eyes out-feel like such a bad mommy. I'll keep you guys posted on what the vet says tomorrow. The little piece that is dangling is not deep..but I want to be sure. My poor baby. |
Don't feel bad, I wouldn't have thought about it either. Are you sure they got burned? Maybe he scratched it on something that was on the ground. I have heard to watch them on the road in the summer but unless I was walking them for a long time on the road I wouldn't ever think about a dog burning his paws. Poor thing. I hope everything turns out ok, I'm sure it will. Keep us updated. |
Ohhh hunny, please dont beat yourself up over this....in fact Im so glad that I read this post beacause I would have never thought of it happening either....You have saved my two pups from a painful experience and I thank you....I hope your baby is ok....good luck hun. |

I hope he feels better, I am so sorry he burned his feet. Let us know what the vet says. My girls send louie kisses |
OMG! I didnt know that could happen to our babies either. Dont beat yourself up bc that could happen to anyone. Give lots of kisses and good luck at the vet tomorrow! |
POOR BABY ! That sounds awful and I agree with everyone - accidents happen - Did you ask the vet if you could give him a tiny bit of Baby Asprin for pain ? Sometimes it's ok - but PLEASE CALL and check with the VET first before ever giving medication - I hope he has a good night and sleeps well - and good luck tommorrow - I'd keep a very close eye on him tonight just in case..... |
I hope your little one is feeling better. Don't feel like a bad mom. These things happen sometimes. The fact that you are so concerned is what makes you a good mom. Best of luck at the vet. We will say a prayer for your little one. |
Hello yorkie friends. I took my baby to the vet this morning and he said he's going to be just fine. Vet said it wasn't too bad, but that people don't realize how sensitive our little ones foot pads are-which of course was enough to make me start balling! He said I need to be extra careful when it's hot. He said that the foot pads will regenerate...just to watch him and make sure he's not licking them because it can cause infection. It was just the top layer on one foot that peeled. Louie seems okay, he's just a little moppy today. Vet suggested shoes for him, but I bought some and he hated them...wouldn't let me put them on. So, he said baby socks...like the ones they sell at old navy or the gap with the rubber grip on the bottom. We have bbq's all the time and people come over to the pool and he loves being outside with everyone so I don't want to isolate him when we have gatherings. So, I will try the socks... Thank you guys for your prayers and concerns and suggestions. You guys are the best. Louie sends big moppy kisses and says thank you! :animal36 |
Just saw this and I'm glad things are looking up for Louie. |
Get Well Soon Louie! :nursing: :roses: |
Awww, bless his heart! I'm glad hes' going to be ok, poor baby! I never thought about this either, I didn't know they were so sensetive! |
preventions the best medicine Don't get yourself all upset over something you couldn't of known would happen. We all are learning as we go, and each pup is different, some have tougher feet than others. They do make summer time footwear for our little guys, so now that you know your baby has sensitive feet and not tougher ones, why not get him some and have him wear them when you know he will be in places that may be too hot for his tootsies? Just a suggestion. My hubbys family had a yorkie for 16 years named Dougal, he was a gentle soul, but his body was tough as nails. He could go outside in the harshest of conditions, but as long as he had a coat on he was fine, now My LiL Moe, he is a toughie in spirit, but his feet cant handle cold or damp, something I found out by him keep getting colds when he went out in the wet, he now has rainy days shoes, and has no more colds. My grandma always said, prevention is the best medicine.I hope the LiL sweety gets healed quick and is padding about happy soon.I know you said he didn't like them, and neither did Moe at first, but after a full week of making it routine, he began to adjust and paid no mind to the shoes.Summer shoes are light weight and so aren't too hard to train them into.Good luck. |
For future reference: I'd suggest keeping at least one aloe vera plant around the house. Nothing can beat them for first aid to mild or moderate burns. Just cut off a leaf, cut it open so the gel inside the leaf is exposed, and slap it on the burn. The pain subsides quickly, it promotes healing, and it is completely non-toxic. In fact, if your furbaby licks it, it's even good for the digestion. And the various first-aid products that you can buy that contain aloe vera are no where near as good. For the most part, they only contain enough to be able to put the name on the product. The raw, full-strength gel right from the leaf can't be beat, and it's equally good for people or puppies. My first exposure to aloe vera was about 40 years ago. At a barbeque at my (former) in-laws' house, I stepped on a burning charcoal briquet that had gotten tossed out of the cooking pit. A blister was coming up instantly. My mother-in-law stuck an aloe leaf on in and wrapped something around it to keep it there. Two days later, you couldn't even tell where I'd been burned. |
